This is not quite the best Richter could do with this piece,fine tho it is in some ways. It seems a bit studio-bound & dry. His live recording from Prague,(on a typically hilariously faulty Petrof)has,for my ears far more sparkle & verve.Richter is, in any case fartoo large a subject to dismiss, or to idolise.He was very uneven in quality,(sublime to ridiculous),and very contradictory in utterance,musical & verbal.

I'm sorry but music is not dependent on study with the composer,who may not even be a very good teacher.Ravel must hav been a dreadful teacher if the example of Perlemuter is given:fumbling,confused,shallow,garish.. Must we not play any music which we've not studied with its composer? Surely one of the joys of different styles is in finding the fresh & unpredjudiced viewpoint of"exotic"artits; Alicia in Brahms,Cherkassky in Stockhausen(!),Gieseking in Rachmaninoff...Better no straitjackets!

You know, I think I agree with you! Just every now and then, when I get that sensation of pain while listening to Debussy, I feel like he's my favorite... but I never cease to be amazed by Maurice Ravel! Only time will tell who ends up stealing my heart for good ;)

Yes, some amazingly thuggish grimaces and some great playing. I have to say that for me, Lipatti's fabulous range of colour & buoyancy conveys a greater sense of FUN. Gracioso means 'jester' after all...

By the way, it was not a piano competition. It was a part of a concert at a church. It is nice to learn whole piece from Miroirs but I have not done entire Miroirs yet. I hope I can do that in the future. Thank you again ! ;)

Thank you for watching my performance ! I listened the orchestra version of this piece which sounds lighter than double glissando on a piano and I use some trick for the double glissando not to force it. According to the Casadesus edition, "Ravel did not care whether the glissando was performed with one or two notes. He said it depended on the keyboard." So I practiced with single glissando first and added a second note later. That way you can feel free to play double glissando. Try it !

Very impressive performance! I've never heard such an expressive version of the Alborada del Gracioso. I especially liked how you played the double glissandos. How do you do that? When ever I try, my hands always get stuck to the keys. Haha. Was this a piano competition? Anyways very nice job. I'm only starting to learn the first two from the set: Noctuelles and Oiseaux Tristes. Do you have any advice for learning the entire Miroirs? Thanks.

I wish i could like it better but, for me it's too lacking in temperament, sounding grey & flat. Just the notes pressed down sort of okay, but no brilliance & weak rythmically.Of course i'd be deloght to play it "as well as"her, but wouldn't publish it. Try Lipatti, especially if you like repeated notes & glissandi(and no cheating there, it was done on 78's!)
