They are both investment alternatives although typically targeted at different buyers. Quick list of difs: ETFs: traded on exchange, easy to get in and out (trade like stocks), can be very low fee, often passively managed to benchmark/index. Hedge Funds: typically very illiquid (can take years to get out), actively managed, no index as benchmark, high fee product (skills of manager), high minimum investment/need to be qualified investor. the hedge funds have been used by companies like Goldman Sachs to run the price up for FOOD and energy. These companies basically scalp people's food. At the same time we are subsidizing food. so why do we allow commodities markets to run the price up? I don't get it. Is it just the free market at work? What are the limits then? Should we allow Goldman Sachs to hedge grandma's heard medicine? scalp pills for the elderly? You know they would do it since they ran food prices up.

I have watched all the hedge fund related videos and I think it's a great way to get an overview of what hedge funds do and why they are different from mutual funds. I can start to see why there is so much hype around these funds but I am interested enough now to try and read a book to learn more! thank you very much for doing this - really useful.

For the long hedge, don't the close their position before delivery of the copper, to realize the gain on the contract? So in order to close their position, they would short, (i.e. sell a copper future contract) and recognize the gain, or loss, and then purchase copper at the spot.

good question. On technical grounds (supply/demand), you are right, the futures price can vary. But on fundamental grounds, with shorter maturity, the futures price will move just about 1:1 (i.e., the delta of a futures is EXP[rt] which is near to 1.0). So, it's a safe place to start. Why is it when you change the MAY 09 Spot Price , the May 09 Future Price also changes to the same value ? Are they meant to be always be the same ? Can it be different ? (eq. if change to may09 spot price to $5 , the may09 future price alternatively changes to $4.90 ?)

@indrius, not really, misses the point. Company doesn't lock-in a price to buy the copper that exactly they need to buy at exactly the time they need to buy it. The commodity underlying the future is not the same as the copper needed. That's basis risk. In practice, it's almost impossible to lock-in the future cost (unless you happen to need the copper specified in the contract at exactly the time it is delivered). Two assets, not one, they aren't the same, that's basis risk.

I'd like to compare this sketch, if I may, to an episode of 'Two Pints of Lager' the hilarious BBC2 comedy. In one episode the boyfriend character picks his nose and this causes the girlfriend character (who is hilariously sitting beside him) to be quite disgusted! The studio audience naturally are in hysterics. It's amazing how comedy just keeps on evolving and getting better on the BBC!

I don't think Hugh 'forgot his lines'. I think the whole point of the sketch is that it's non linear or reversed. The punch line comes at the beginning when you first realize what the joke is, then the joke is enjoyed throughout its length and finally there is (inevitably) an ending. Or you could say the punch line is that there is no punch line, which is a punch line in itself. Or it is there to show that the sketch is actually not funny at all when they get it right. And that is funny!

And although I know it´s nearly impossible, at least to a fan, to wipe all this away and concentrate on the wit of one simple sketch, I still think the Bits of Fry&Laurie are the most genius pieces of linguistic comedy I´ve ever seen. I read your comment yesterday and till now was contemplating a bit about whether I would have found this sketch less brilliant if I would not take into consideration that it is performed by Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, who both wrote absolutely hilarious and amazing novels and did the most perfect interpretation of the Jeeves and Wooster-Novels in their Tv-Series. (Wow this sentence was rather too long to make any sense, wasn´t it?)
