well now that you say that he was insecure of taking Blackmore's place, I sort of understand, before I joined my own band, i used to front for one of my friends punk metal bands when their singer had surgery, and I was insecure, I didn't feel right about doing it but I didn't want to let my friend down. And I'm not saying Bolin was a bad person for doing drugs but yeah it will fuck you up, so maybe he didn't suck, but it was bad time for him to be in Deep Purple

bolins drug problem really affected his playing ,i ben in bands with a few druggies and when they were high there playing wasnt as good even though they swore it was till they heard it on tape playback.that spectrum album with bolin is awesome,bolin played great on come taste the band,hughes is great on the trapeze album with mel galley and dave holland who also played drums for judas priest , hollands a good grove drummer.

Stormbringer totally blew me away. I would rate Stormbringer and Burn about the same, as far as my taste. To this day, I think that the vocal harmonies of Hughes and Coverdale have never been outdone. There will never be another Glenn Hughes, nor another David Coverdale. Nor another Paul Rogers. Let us truly relish their presence while they are with us, and not wait until they are gone ala Hendrix, Kossoff, Rhoads, Vaughan, etc. They are living legends.

Glenn f**king Hughes! If ya like this, check out HTP2 with Joe Lynn Turner, awesome! And Graham Bonnet's solo album! Hey, my fave DP album is Stormbringer. Better than In Rock, it's fuller, more honest, if that makes sense. More soulful obviously, but also a lot deeper. Does anyone else agree?

Bolin was rock-funk guitar player, something like Nuno Bettencourt today...he(Bolin) had feeling like Glenn...and Smoke on the water is rock song...only rock...all music is about feeling, If you feel funk better like rock and dont like Smoke on the water so you will play Smoke on the water like rookie...he ignored Smoke on the water and drunk Blackmore...yipee!

Maybe you are right. You should check out his solo stuff. He was great with the James Gang, and his work with Billy Cobham was just phenomenal. I have read Glenn's opinion of him and it was very high. Others who have played with him have had nothing but good things to say about him as a person and a musician. I actually hear that he was very insecure about taking Blackmore's spot in Purple. I'm sure that didn't help.

have you seen how Bolin butchers Smoke on the Water, Coverdale does it great but hughes could have done it better by himself, or if it was Ian and Glenn it would have been paradise. Bolin complete fucks it up, he doesn't go along with Lord on Keyboards. The Keyboards and Guitar are suppose to be one on that song and he prances around and goes out of the boundaries of the song. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Bolin was a amazing guitar player, but he sucked for Purple.

How can you go wrong with a combo of Soul, Funk, Blues and Rock, i perfer the Ian Gillan led Deep Purple but Glenn Hughes has got more soul and depth in his vocals then Ian Gillan will ever have, plus he just much plain better then Gillan, but without a doubt Ian and Glenn are millions of times better then Coverdale, if Deep Purple went on with just Hughes on vocals and someone besides that fairy Tommy Bolin on guitar, i think i could have been able to tolerate deep purple better

Wonderful. Thankyou for putting this up. He had this amazing charisma that you can catch (some of) by watching this. Look at him telling the story of the dream - what a storyteller's imagination! The people in the studio with him must have been spellbound. It's rare to meet anyone like that these days - sadly.

I deeply admire both Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes. Though he could have done things quite differently where Plath was concerned, I always suspected Ted Hughes was a human with a soul and not a beast-cruel in his intent to kill, as usually portrayed, and this corroborates my belief. Thank you. This was a poignant vision of a talented poet, tortured by elements beyond his control.

I saw Ted Hughes at an A-level updates thing on poetry in London, with thousands of students. Other Poets were there; Simon Armitage who analysed one of Hughes' poems, Glyn Maxwell and others. Ted came on and read a few of his poems, stupidly I can't remember which ones. Also the sound system distorted, maybe his voice did this. I saw this man. I heard his voice. I won't miss him, because I didn't know him. I can read and listen to his poetry anytime.

The thing is if you attach a negative connotation to any word in the English language, then that word is gonna be negative LOL - Saying the "N-word" as opposed to saying Negro or Nigga is hypocritical IMO, especially considering the definition is still the same: "black person" - Now if you give the word a more positive meaning then you take the negative stigma from the word, effectively making the word worthy of being used. That is what Langston Hughes did with his poem. Quite genius I think.

I wasn't aware of Langston Hughes or his works until it was pointed out to me recently by a friend. I guessed that maybe he'd delved deeper into the subject but wasn't sure. I don't have a problem with the word negro, it was just it highlighted race during a poem that's all. I'm sure it was only mean't in a positive way. I never use the 'N' word as I believe it is such a derogatory term and is overused. I'll check out the forum for writers, thanks...

I (in fact) use the word Negro all the time. I'm 32 years old and for me the word has a certain character and strength that the often used "Nigga" has never had. You must not be familiar with Langston Hughes' body of work - Here is one of the most outstanding Poets I've ever perchance to read. He did indeed go much deeper in to the subject with his stories about Semple. If you know about him - you'd realize he was one of the most prolific of the Harlem Renassaince Poets that ever hit the scene. The use of the word Negro in this poem is actually a positive appellation - no negative connotation.

Great, great, great. But we should credit John Hughes for a lot of the greatness, though. It's his films, and the are just teenage-ART! Well, I have actually just seen Sixteen Candles and Breakfast Club (and Weird Science, but it's not in this, so I guess it doesn't count), but I already LOVE John Hughes, think he's great. I agree with you completely. The great thing about Fullmetal Alchemist, more than the plot, is its believable characters. Pretty much everyone has at least a little back story that adds to their personality.
