ekjudo, Kendo is not only the sportish part of Kenjutsu. Kendo actually adopts most of Kenjutsu and Bushido philosophy, but istead of targeting the martial art to kill, it targets itself to the development of ones mind. So, even if you are not using a real sword, you should pretend and fight like you have one. Actually, samurai stoped using real swords for practice since Oda Nobunaga era; They replaced their swords for wooden ones(booken) and their Öyoroi for early prototypes of Bogu.

Kendo that is depicted in movies dont have that realistic value like you see in real kendo because in the feudal times of the samurai it is a killing art and duels usually occur at least five seconds.With the kendo in movies the fight seems endless after exchanging blade for blade

In order to score a hit in kendo, a person must strike at a certain location (head, rt wrist, or rt side of the torso). At the same time of the strike, they must have a strong kiai (the yelling/screaming) and a good follow through. Though they do strike, not all the strikes were valid.

No worries. There IS a lot of technique here and it is a very intense mental contest. Harada-San (white) seemed to be the most aggressive player coming up with the most strikes, however Suzuki-San, although he appeared to be moving backward a lot was holding centre more and goading Harada to come within his maai (distance). They spent a LOT of time in isoku itono ma (point to point) and very little in tsuba zeriai (extreme close). They are very skilled and hard out players.

hey, i don't want to sound rude or offense anyone, but I really don't understand what's happening here, like i'm not getting what counts as a hit. they seem to be hitting the other some time to time, yet they continue. is it like fencing where its the first to get to 15 hits? also, is there a lot of technique? because for my inexperienced eyes, they just seem to be hitting the way a kid with a sword would.

Really not that hard, they're designed to stop blades penetrating, they don't really stop the physical blows at all. Tis why you don't see much Kendo vs Fencing, it isn't really safe for fencing weapons to go against a kendoka's armour and vice versa. An epee-ist going for a foot hit against a kendoka could end up rather nasty for the latter's bare foot. :P

Ninninvt: Not only do you need glasses Id say you need to take a few Physics lessons as well. If that shinai is bending then it is due to a momentum change. As for the danger, I would be more concerned with Sabre point going through the Kendo face guard & hitting him in eye! Now the head guard is used by the Kali guys & they use wooden batons & how about Kevlar vests!

I posted a video comment with the exact frame of the shinai hit, waiting for approval from Kucarain, or you can just look at it on my profile. I have tried fencing (only a month) and kendo (3 years), so I realize how the instruments react. That shinai acted as a hit that continues off to the side after impact should act. By the way, would it even be safe for the fencer to get hit in the stomach or throat by that? How hard is olympic fencing armor?

Believe it or not, shinai bend too. Heck, look at the sabre, which is made of metal (surprise, surprise), and look how much that bends by itself. Look, and you can see the shinai bend on the way up just as much as it does on the way down. Yay for physics.

Side note: I'd love to do bayonet fencing. Also, if you look at the camera angle that is behind the fencer, you can see he missed. Either way, I would give the proverbial point to either of them. The fencer comes in and slaps him one, the kendoka jumps backwards without a hint of a parry. Kinda makes me wish Mr. Sabruer didn't just slap him one on the arm as he pulled it back and made this a whole lot easier for the internet-referee's here.

Yer, if you & the ref think that the shinai made contact then you both need glasses. & for you information the term fencing is an abbreviation for the word defence. During the middle ages it meant everything knives, swords, pole arms & unarmed combat all of which was used on the battle field. 100yrs ago, fencing also included quarterstaff, single stick, & along side the swords they also had bayonet fencing. Was the bayonet also not used on the battle field then?

As for those that keep talking about armor, samurai vs. knights, horses, and real swords. You are idiots. This whole made-for-tv exercise proved nothing, and all of your fantasy modeling is pointless and flawed. Fencing is not even a war skill, it was a dueling skill. There were not armies of fencers going after at other, that is idiotic. Samurai warriors fought with spears and bows, not only with swords. Replacing a spear was much cheaper than a katana. Even duelists would often use spears.

Sorry, please look at 0:21-0:22 and then tell me he missed. The shinai came down on his head clearly. It was a clean hit. As for the kendoka's skill, he reacted to the attack like a trained kendoka would: jerked his target area back (the head), and struck back. His step back also put his scoring area on his shinai into the proper range for the fencer's head. If he had lunged as a reaction, he wouldn't be able to strike with the scoring section of his shinai.

well the commentators are mistaken he didn't hit the fencer plain and simple. and the shimpan gave the win to the kendoka, so officially the victory is his, bad calls happen. and there is no way the fencer won as he didn't score in the kendo rules (bellow waist = no point) nor did he score in his own rules (saber bellow waist = no point) nobody should have one as nobody scored, but the judges rule and he said kendoka won.

For those that can't understand the Japanese commentators, they said that the fencer "men o toraremashita." "Had his head taken." He was hit in the head, so stop fussing about whether the kendoka hit or not, the commentators said that he hit. The commentators also acknowledge that the fencer's strike landed first, and that it is the fencer's victory. Looks like just a slap to the butt to me.

Fencer hit the Kendoka in the hip first, but Kendoka landed the hit to the head. Check 0:21-0:22, the scoring area of the shinai hits the top of the head and continues off. Its a moot point anyways, because the scoring rules was not explained, as Kendo and Fencing operated under different rules. If the Kendoka hit the hip of the Fencer, under Kendo rules, it would not be a scoring strike, while in Foil rules, the whole torso counts and Saber its pretty much everything above the waist (not hip?)

Actually he is not training them,he is examining them,that's an Examination Test,they are 8th Dan and he is testing them whether they deserve to become a 9th or not.They first start with a Keiko(Free but very technical combat),then they do a Kakarigeiko(Demonstration of the basic attacks in kendo) and finally the end with a Kirikaeshi which is some kind of "katta"(not really a katta but close enough) which helps you improve your technics.

Wrong. Kumdo and kendo are almost identical. Just one significant rule: sonkyo before and after geiko. A few more differences, use of Korean to call the targets and attitude during the fight, but no new rules. In fact, the Korean Kumdo Team won the last World Kendo Championship. Kumdo is the pronunciation way of the japanese word Kendo. Koreans claims about kendo origins are more a nationalistic claim than a historical evidence. Haedong kumdo is "another" thing which I don't like to talk about.

It is not a ritual - it is Kata. It is like a duel following a pattern. Correct and effective technique as well as mental attitude are learnt this way in many Japanese MAs. In Kendo we do this and also a fullcontact training using practice swords and protective gear, this also includes a free sparring.

And following up I do agree that a katana is not particularly heavy. Makes sense too, since particularly heavy swords are not particularly easy to use effectively. YMMV of course. ;-) Though, heavy or not, even with proper technique you won't be swinging around swords for hours without the need to build serious muscle. Technique matters but you take a look at the strong old-timers and they're not exactly frail either.

Not at all. A regular kata bokuto will usually weight 450-650 grams all things depending. A suburi bokuto is closer to a sword. The two I have are 1000g and 1200g IIRC. A sword for kendo kata will usually be 1200g, give or take 200. Bear in mind this is heavier than the usual iaito, simply because iaito are not made for contact with other blades. For kendo kata you need a sword that can take this contact, which means they will be a tad heavier. But don't trust YouTube. Research! :-)

Hy! I was training there. This dojo is in Fuchu Prison (Tokyo). When my sensei said that we will go to training a prison I was amused. If you want to be a policeman or jailer in Japan you must practice Japanese Budo (Kendo or Judo). That's the reason police stations and prisons had a dojo. Kids started Kendo in 5-6 years old than they training every day in school at morning and in the nearest dojo of his house in afternoon.

i think the title "prison" a little bit exaggerating. Personally, that video actually reminds me of my own training session. The sensei that showed how to do men-uchi reminds me of how i teach my kouhais. i could hardly say their training session was as harsh as in a prison. it's quite normal. speaking of "killer" sensei, one of my sensei sometime went on a tsuki frenzy when one his pupil did a tsuki on him..lol... he had his pupil nailed to the wall lol don't tsuki ur sensei..especially 7 dan

Mentally they're much better prepared for a fight than most people, including most professional fighters are. Kendo is excellent for developing mushin and fudoshin.

This set of kata just has the name Nihon Kendo Kata, the one you are talking about is the Kihon Kendo Kata, wich is a newer set of kata for beginners showing all the basic techniques. The two are totally different. There is no such thing as the first kata, as there are many different sets of kata.

Yes i know, in this video its bokken, that sure, but sometimes, when you are 7th dan i think (i don't remember) you can use katana! I don't do kata with a 8th dan, he just was the teacher! In paris last month we have got the visite of 17 8th dan. that was realy wonderfull. I've got actually the armor and i am 2nd kyu. And you ? Thanks for the comments, guys. You should not lean forwards too much to avoid the pain but I know it hurts. So practice your seiza and gradually put weight on heels more. As you can see in the videos, you do not want to lean forwards or backwards too much. Thanks,
