I did some more searching. Apparently they had signed a contract as teenagers, in another language and without legal council, forbidding them to sing. The producer had the singers lined up but thought their "image" wasn't very marketable so he signed up more handsome singers. The producer was more to blame than to naive teenagers, IMHO.
