Here in Australia we have mandatory vote, and it ain't that great. There are loads of people who just don't care enough to vote properly so they vote for person whos better looking or who has better public image, regardless of what their policies are. Our current prime minister went on Rove (popular talk show) and his opponent didn't and I'm sure he got good chunk of votes from Rove's fans. Then there are people who just cant get out of their house to vote, so they take $20 fine and just pay it.

Personally I think there should be mandatory voting with an abstention box on the ballot paper for people who wish to express their wish not to vote and dissatisfaction with all the candidates. Too many people have given so much, too many people have died for the democratic privilege and we should all, Scots like myself or Americans or anyone else, take it very seriously. Apathy is just not right in this. But anyway, well said Craig. Much better than making cheap digs about the old country ;-)

OK. Let's discuss the situation with Iran. Bush says the USA should invade Iran because they're building nuclear weapons. They, Iran's politicians at least,have made it very clear they plan to use the weapons on Israel. People say we should let the UN handle it. The problem with "self-help" is all summed up in the title "self" meaning all me me me, add the "help", we assume we can just fix ourself by "1" magic book. True change and help will take more than the same brain that created the mess you're in. Most of all, we are the most impatient generation in the most impatient nation. I thought Mark Hansen came off very badly, he seemed insecure and his points were often irrelevant, labored or badly constructed, and the other guy does make an important point. Too many people turn to self-help for comfort, in the same way that they turn to double cheeseburgers - not to solve their underlying problems, but just for short-term relief, and thus they are never cured and always need their self-help fix. Very few programs provide tools to actually solve deep, complex issues.
