i question whether or not it was done on in real life as well. 130+mph on a 3 mile road wouldnt make much sense for as long as it took him to reach 190. seems you would run out of road. but the video still seems pretty accurate in the amount of time it would take to reach that speed. technically, the car should be able to go faster than 190+ on a dyno because the car wouldnt be restricted due to the frontal pressure that would normally be placed on the car at those speeds.

no, they started in first. i can get to 170 easy in my c6 in fifth. sixth gear becomes useless when driving those speeds. you wouldnt be able to go any faster because the limitation isnt the car, but the drag from its outside environment. plus, i know the shift points in the car and it shifts out of second at about 80-85mph.

I'm calling dyno on this one for 2 reasons. The shadowing in the gauges would change if he was going down a highway. 2, you have to have traction control off when your on a dyno or else the car freaks out and wont accelerate correctly.

He went 186 mph assuming his speedo is accurate, unfortunately honda bikes normally register at about 8 mph faster than actual speed. I would wager he was really only doing 180ish at the most and it took him longer to get up there than the latest liter bikes can do it.

They can afford the camera - the problem is that there weren't any 'good' cameras built to handle the kind of vibration that this thing was going through. If you did this today, you'd stick a digi-camcorder in there, but they didn't really exist a decade ago. They were using tape based hardened cameras and transmitting, but there are limits to what you can do when moving parts are involved. Even mil-spec stuff would have struggled with this.

nope... even the Budweiser team admit that no sonic boom was heard. they say the sound of the engines were so loud up close that you couldn't hear the boom. However, no boom was heard at distance. the USAF tower also originally came up with a speed of 38mph and only came up with a record speed 8 hours later. type in "budweiser rocket" on wikipedia and have a look. pretty ballsy effort for 1979 but no one seriously claims anymore that it broke the sound barrier.

Last summer at the Canadian Forces Base in Cold Lake, Alberta, I had the great pleasure of going up in a F-18 fighter plane. I live near a community called bridge city in texas and I think all but 14 homes where destroyed they still have yet to get help. The powerplants for Thrust SSC were Rolls Royce "Speys", the type of engine fitted to the RAF Phantom variant. I don't know if they were stock items found lying around (like its that easy!!) or from a decommissioned aircraft. And yeah, the Phantom...what a plane! Now the Germans no longer fly at airshows we dont get to see it in Britain anymore. Gutted!!
