hi velcor, tempo for any Baroque music depends on performer's discretion. i think their tempo is just right. i played the solo violin part then, about 4 years ago in a tv station here in my country and we decided to play it a bit faster than this. but i assure you this video is sublime. hehehe.. Ah, yes, I now see why they are called the Brandenberg Concertos, instead of the brandenberg concerto grossos, which sounds rather odd. I also just realized that most composers dont even put concerto grosso in the title, even if it is one. Also, I agree with you that they are a little bit of heaven on youtube, but my favorite B. concerto is not to be found here. =(

yes it is a concerto grosso..but Bach wrote these for the Duke( or something like a royal title) of Brandeburg,hence the name Brandenburg Concerto..I hope that's what you want to know ! But anyway I love Bach, Gould ( most of the time) and enjoy these little bit of heaven on youtube..agree?...

BTW, I've never read a review of Gould's Beethoven sonatas, and I can't for the life of me imagine why. I have an LP of Gould performing Beethoven sonatas, including a monumental interpretation of the Tempest. I find that while Gould plays at a higher tempo than most pianists, if you sync your mind to his tempo, you'll find that within that tempo Gould delivers an astonishing performance with all the subtly and style that one listens for in pianists that play at considerably slower tempi.

thats my only criticism of this recording also. i saw this piece live and they played a harpsichord. despite all the instruments shortcomings such as limited dynamics, etc; it sounds much better, particularly at the cadenza in the first movement.

As much as I love Gould's interpretations of Bach on the piano, this recording of my favourite classical movement EVER is too uptight, tense and just sounds awkward. It's such a beautifully joyous piece and this performance does not convey that.

i think rachmaninov's version is a good one to compare.. clearly there are two melodies in the second part of the second section, Gilel's brings out the lower one more, I don't see the problem with this. Maybe it could have been phrased a little clearer but it's easier said than done and his phrasing is actually very good. I just don't agree with you s3xyasiann because it sounds as if you don't accept that he shoudl bring out the lower melody and I just can't accept such a rigid interpretation.

I imagine that his family was big one, and I am not at all surprised that you are related to him. you are in High school? so, i imagine you can't be more than 18-19 years old. When i was 18 i've already been listening to Mahler for a few years, but yeah, high school is probably the time when Mahler's music is highly relevant.

I would like see all the symphony but this symphony is too large. It lasts 85 minutes and the Finale (In Tempo das Scherzo) lasts half an hour but its a movement is a musical wonderful specially the last part when appearts the choir and vocal the solists. Problem with interpreting Mahler is that Conductors over sensualize the Mahler score.Bernstein once said Mahler is one of the easiest composers to conduct,because Mahler used to give extensive directions in his score. Conductors don't get it they do their own thing and people faint with admiration.Listen to Bruno Walters' renditins.People call them soft and dull.Now someone tell me if there is anybody who is more qualified than Walter to conduct Mahler.Abbado's rendtion is faithful to Mahler!!!

Ah, I'd love to go hear them live in Lucerne. I'm just going by my impression formed by what I've heard on the radio over the years. It's not an opinion etched in stone, by any means. And now, after having seen Mazel conduct die Walkure, my definition of "uninspired" has changed. That performance was flat out dull. I've *never* found Abbado dull. Besides, what musicians think of a conductor may not correspond to how an audience, live or via recording, connects to him.

I agree that he is reliable. There are those who call him Abbadull but I wouldn't go that far. Besides, his recent works often rise above the level of just being solid. The 2 and the 9 in his Mahler DVD cycle are probably the most intense performances of these symphonies I've heard.

Google Heiligenstadt Testament and get the whole story. It was written in 1802 "in despair over his growing deafness". He wasn't deaf yet, but he knew it was just a matter of time - that's when his crisis of the soul was. By 1812 he had to stop performing, 11 years before the premiere of the 9th. Not that he didn't keep brooding over it - a lot of his music is about triumph over adversity -, but it could be any adversity. E.g. Vienna was occupied by the French. This is not simple program music.

When the 5th is peaceful, it's just lying in wait for you. I don't think it ever did. Think of all the great orchestras in the US, all the great soloists, including African-Americans like Kathleen Battle, Andre Watts, Wynton Marsalis. Thanks to modern recordings, Youtube, classical internet radio, etc. etc. - even movies like Amadeus - there are probably more people listening and playing than ever before. And then there are the Asians, Zubin Mehta (Indian), Kiri te Kanawa (Maori) ... it's truly the music of the world.
