This is an incredible piece, one of my favourites. I did a bit of study on Beethoven, and it's interesting how his physical deficiencies are often overstated. I guess some people want to make him out to be god-like, almost. Having said that, there is no denying this man's genuis. Incredible symphony.

if you are just starting out, listen to the 9th symphony in its entirety. The third movement is breathtaking and the fourth is incomparable. It is still the most powerful piece of music ive ever heard. it is perfection

No, it's not. It's the easiest to play, if you aren't very good at playing scales. But d-flat major and B/H-major is the easiest when you know how to play them. C-major is a terrible hand-possision. Since there are no black keys, all five fingers have to be at the same hight, which is very uncomfortable, accually

Chopin was known to have said that C major/A minor were the hardest keys to play in because you are missing the "guideposts" of the black keys as you play. You must be extremely accurate with little assistance to play pieces in those keys that have any sort of complexity. Anyone who assumes a piece is easy simply because of its key is only revealing their ignorance of the instrument.

I know what you mean. I used to avoid watching vids of 5 year olds playing Chopin, Beethoven etc. as if it was a piece of cake... eek. Do us all a favor, and just inch back out? OK, champ? It will save you a lot of humiliation. If you really want to play like a king in D-flat, the way I do, you need to play the Grosses Konzertsolo, but I don't think you want to go there. I play it with precision, glory, and a lot of truly magnificent rhetorical gestures. I played it in Hungary and they said I was like a Silver King to them.

stageoma, I assume form what you've said that you don't play a musical instrument? If you don't we can safely assume that you have you never played 1st Violin, or 1st of any section in the orchestra for that matter, if you had you would realise that movements like the ones they are making are necessary to bringing the orchestra/section in on time and keeping them in time as they watch you!

Of course and everyone can do whatever he wants.I don't know if this back n forth is more reminiscent of Bach's time and to be honest I don't care too much.Bach didn't told us anything about his music right?So..the movement..there is no suddenly "not allowed".I'm noone who can put rules.For me it's just waste of energy and bad communication among the musicians.Feeling the rythm and the music with no excessive actions is what I like.That head-banging was ironic.That's my opinion. ;)

Oh comon, why can't they enjoy the music while playing it??? Every band on stage dances their own asses off as well, not because they need to do that to make the music, but just because they enjoy playing it and moving to it at the same time.. why is that suddenly "not allowed" when it's classical music? Let them enjoy the rythm!

They aren't headbanging, if they were I don't think they could play the music. Also, they can do whatever they want, they're playing it and besides, it's much better if they're moving around like that, probably more reminiscent of Bach's time. You know When the audience would throw tomatoes at the musicians if they didn't like them because they thought tomatoes would kill you if you ate it?

You make these moves to play it right?lolol that's really funny..come on.You don't have to make your doby dancing to play the music right.These movements are just the bad way to control and hold the rythm.I find it ungly and very funny in the bad way.Musicians of that level doesn't have the need of the movement.The rythm comes from inside..you don't have to head banging.Espesially the cellos.Although great music.Nice tempo.

Exactly so how do u know it was this fast? In my opinion it would sound slower and more artistic and brilliant rather than just rushing through the goddamn piece to sound "impressive" Impressive doesn't mean brilliant and creative. YOu can be impressed with speed but not artistry.

How do you know how fast it is meant to be? Scores in the Baroque period did not have tempo markings or anything. There is no way of hearing how it sounded then. The only thing you can do is research it then take an educated guess. And its not that fast

I had no idea that Chopin wrote a Scherzo in D minor, but that's not Argerich's fault. As a musical description of a fire hydrant this interpretation is magnificent. As anything else, it is, quite frankly, just so much steaming dogshit. This is muddle, not music. I play this with fire, expertise, and mastery. She plays it like she's just had sex with half the judges on the panel. Oh yeah, she really did.

Uh, that wasn't a mistake and it had nothing to do with Argerich. The video actually CUTS OUT before the last note sounds. You see her hands move to the last chord but no sound comes out because the video ends prematurely.

But do you not realize that rock music today would sound COMPLETELY different without the existence of Beethoven and this specific work? He did things in this symphony that no one had ever done before. Without it, Classical music would not have evolved; not in the same way at least. Classical became Romantic because of this, which led to Impressionism, which led to jazz, which eventually led to the popular music that's around today. So without Beethoven, your "real" music might not exist today.

Oh I agree. Musical historians will concur with the notion that Chopin loved Rubato. I think, though, too much Rubato can change the mood of the piece. Everyone is different though. Horowitz's rendition was supreme, in my opinion. Many people will disagree.

I'm also going to have to agree with DiVeronica. This movement is stunningly beautiful, yes, but pleasant surely doesn't embody what it evokes. The theme screams, though sanely, a feeling of longing. Grayson: have you listened to the 4th movement? I'm sure you have. Well, listen to it again and contrast it with the 3rd movement. This does not portray a feeling of insanity. To me, it portrays a recollection of beauty and then realization that it can't be yours (Clara)...but it's controlled.

Folks, This is Semyon Bychkov and the WDR Orchestra. He has been principle conductor since 1997 and contrary to robertofiore he is marvelous in my eyes. Until you know more of him, his talents and musical depths, keep your callous comments, robert... he isn't a stick on the podium, he is transfering his vision of Brahms to the WDR and THEY respond to him as if he were part of each. Of the 4 Chopin Ballades the 3rd is the one that IMO is the most difficult to get a grip on - interpretively. Many superb performances of the 1st and 4th - but not the 3rd. Zimmerman is just awesome here. Rhythmically you are always aware of the beat (in this case of offbeat). He allows you to hear EVERYTHING - some counterpoints most performers miss are right there - the grace notes in the chords of the climax (all there - CLEARLY) Just superb!!
