Uppenbarligen. Jag anmärkte på vad du nu kallar "sant amerikanskt mannér", att "skjuta problemen" "istället för att jobba med långsiktiga lösningar". Om det vore så en så typisk amerikanskt lösning så tycker man ju att du borde kunna referera till åtminstonde en källa som säger att det du talar om eller ens något liknande hänt minst någon gång?! I've never been to Sweden, but I have had alot of experience with Iceland, which puts every woman on the dole for year after giving birth. I was very impressed with the behavior of the children there, and the warmth of their relations with their parents. And as a lifelong resident of the US, I would consider the US far less wealthy, because of the unhappiness here, whatever the monetary stats might be.

As I Swede, I can vouch for Norberg on these particular issues: Johan Norberg speaks the truth. Sweden is rich and wealthy to the extent that we're free -and we're poor and miserable to the extent that we're unfree. Such is the nature of the mixed economy of Sweden. USA is much more rich and wealthy, because despite it also being a mixed economy, it's not as "poorly" mixed as the Swedish one. The moral and practical ideal would be laissez-faire capitalism. Read Atlas Shrugged!

no, "In defense of global capitalism" was written in 2001, way before "Shock Doctrine" came out :-) I am currently reading George Soros' "The age of fallibility", published in 2006. Johan tries to play the victim card by saying that Naomi connects non democratic regimes and "liberalization". Well, if he read the book he should know the following countries ,with democratically elected governments, also feature: Argentina (Menem), South Africa (Mandela-Mbeki), Russia (Yeltsin), Poland (Walesa). I've read Naomi's book. The problem with Johan and his counter argument is that he hides behind broad-meaning expressions like "liberalized economies", "democratic governments". When is an economy considered "liberalized"? What do you exactly mean by democratic governments? He cites the exceptions (Mauritius, tiny group of islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean) to the rule (South Africa, treated in the book) as examples.

You're right, I've just been exposed to him via youtube. But jumping on Naomi Klein-as an American victim of the likes of Fox news, I tend to be suspicious of folks trying to cover-up information. Klein brought out some very important facts. I'm glad Johan has criticized corporations, but I'm don't think I've been impressed enough by what I've seen on these threads to invest the time in checking him out. Read his works he states very clearly the cooperations are opportunistic not purely capitalistic and allowing for more government involvement into the market makes it easier for economic and political lines to be blurred. You just never read any of his material.

It really is, although it predates markets of any kind : ) What is really frightening is that the atmosphere of non-freedom, supported by so-called free-trade agreements, may make it illegal to get herbs and supplements making homebirth safer, and the AMA, no doubt a group sporting many "free-market" Republicans, just passed a resolution calling for the gov't to criminalize homebirth. I don't like boycotts, but the AMA truly threatens freedom, and I will boycott their members.

Yes, obviously they're not really free-market, but they say they are. Does Johan Norberg condemn CODEX and the like, big pharma lobbying to be on the take in TMAP, mandated medical tests, the HPV vaccine? In NY state, pharma got caught bribing legislators to mandate an AIDs test. I don't know how much Norberg is really defending free markets vs. the markets that protect the privileged. Elsewhere he was saying what a good MEDICAL system the US has, and I know for a fact in childbirth its horsesh*t. (Stats are easy to look up) In addition to its relative lack of good outcomes, medicine in the US is the almost the most awful controlled market you can imagine. This whole thing is absolutely false. She does mention that the Chicago School economists had developed methods to force democracies to adopt their free market policies. She said they started in Chile by supporting Pinochet's coup and supported fascist dictators throughout South America. In Poland they forced the democratic Solidarity government to adopt their policies through denying aid through the IMF. I love this from the Heritage foundation because she exposes them as complete cretins.
