Killing innocent people is never right in my opinion. But in an attempt to rationalize it, good and innocent people die every day from accidents and violence. By using the death note, you will simply be speeding up the natural order of things, the only diffence is that more criminals and evil people will die relative to innocent people. That should also decrease the amount of innocent people killed by violence. So with the note, you are giving innocent people the benefit of the doubt.

I honestly like both L and Light, however, Light lost sight of his goal in the second episode. He could have easily ignored any threat against him and there would be no way that would have ever found him. If he wouldn't have killed that guy pretending to be L, there would be no proof that he was in Japan or that he even existed. Light could have pulled it off without intentionally killing a single innocent person. I would say Light was hubristic and a bit of a sadist.
