actually kata is for muscle memory and is used in both weapons forms and empty hand forms. didnt intend to tick you off or anything i study Matayoshi kobudo, and shorin ryu karate do. as for the physics i never mentioned it. shuto uk

Sweet vid There is no real regulation weight for nunchucks. Some are made of light wood and others of heavy metals. Some moves actually go faster with heavy chucks because of momentum but they are difficult to control. I would say these are illunimum though.

i reckon there whats called speedchucks dude. my nunchaku are alot thicker speed chucks have a shorter string too. your right nobody is 100% on th video but if you check out the different sorts then thats where its looking.

good for a freestylist oh and those are where you get the term speedchuck probably alumminum and thinner than traditional chucks so you can spin faster with less wind resistance. check out some traditional nunchuku kata and you will see that they spend a great deal on strikes and not on spinning because the nunchukus tend to bounce back when you strike something and learning to control that is important to the users health.

sure I have, but appearently you have not.a fly ball, is a ball that goes out from the hitter and very high. what you a attempting to refer too ( poorly I might add) is a foul ball, and foul balls don't count. anyone, with a little practice can do what he shows in the video. I managed 10 legit hits in a row, with about an hours practice, and a homemade set of chucks, and I am damn sure not an expert of any kind. try it yourself, it isnt that hard.

Hey....these are not "true" nunchakus...they are not made of wood. They are much heavier and it's almost impossible to make these movements. But, congrats, these nunchakus, for demo and having fun are just great. Like Raymond said, it's just practice nunchakus.

The end of the clip has the first of the hojo-undo. Watch closely - no wrist bending, although other clips show hoju-ondo that need a little bend to the wrist to get the proper positioning. "Spins and turns" are freestyle, not weaponry, and if a sensei demonstrates with the nunchaku held very far away from the butt end, it is not being used as a weapon, but as "something to spin". I end up "choked up" like that by mistake, so I won't be showing *myself* doing any nunchaku on YouTube!

Haha I started to notice that as I watched more videos and his English didnt seem as good as yours. I noticed alot of karate stances and some of the terms he uses as I do it myself. The stick has it's length for specific reasons, that reason being for striking. You hold it at the end for striking techniques. You hold it close to the chain/cord for moves such as wrist flips etc. No authentic instructor would teach you to strike from the grip close to the chain/cord. No way.

Whatever style does not use the maximum reach of a nunchaku is historically wrong. And if you were taught to grab the connecting cord or flip it over the wrist, it was definitely not Okinawan kobudo.

What is really different is the discipline he has over his body movements. There are times when it looks like his head is on a slow-speed turntable. He could only do that if he had absolute control of the chux. Mistakes would force him to take "evasive action" and that just isn't happening. By the way glowman: you need to toss those chux a little higher cos they couldn't quite see them on the international space station! LOL

even though they are made from hollow metal tubing they arent super light weight as the wick on the ends does make them a lot hevier and the faster you spin them the hevier they become (centrifucal force). you may find he has been using them for 20+ years. what makes it more impressive is he was born with most of his fingers missing on his right hand.

Theyre not actually nunchaku, he says on his site that theyre "twisters" ( i checked about a year ago) theyre like nunchaku, but from what i can see theyre super light weight, hollow, and theyre much thinner than nunchaku. pretty good for only 10 years practice though!

Origins of nunchaku are discussed in a previous clip I have posted on YouTube. There are 3 "distances" to nunchaku: the strikes you see in this are the middle distance (most of these use the sanchin stance), farther distances involve throwing the weapon (we don't practice this in class!), and closer ones use "choking" maneuvers, not just to the throat, but also the wrists and ankles.

I agree that you need to be taught to use any weapons by a properly qualified teacher. The point I was trying to get across is that when the Kata was developed, the actual sticks would be longer than the modern design of nunchaku of today. It's just what I am surmising from the distance of his hands from his body. This is a very long range form/kata (as illustrated by the demonstration involving the staff).

Kobu and seibu nunchaku kata were created by Shihan Nishiuchi to demonstrate the moves one learns in the hojo-undo. Unfortunately, his tapes don't have the full original one (simply called "Nunchaku Kata") - it is taught *after* mastering those first two, again showing there are some limits to what is shown in this series of videos (did I mention: "nothing takes the place of a good sensei"?!)

Thank you Hempev, for showing a rare video,a traditional (and very effective) Nunchaku Kata! All, please note that the weapon is held at the end for maximum force and it comes nowhere near the body (as I suspect the form was developed using the longer farming flail) so the freestyle techniques that are common these days, would result in some "interesting injuries! It's nice to see a traditional Kata that is not being shown with the subtext of "look how stiff and silly this looks!"

thank you! :) you can read the story about it on wikipedia when you enter nunchuks, its very interesting! nunchuks comes from china and japan. chinese nunchuks have round sticks connected by a chain. the sticks of the japanese (okinawa) version have the shape of a hexagon and are connected by a rope. Ok, it was just a glitch that didn't show me all of the messages, but regardless, your style still fails, too much flare, not enough functionality. Learn some real technical style, cause any time your Nunchaku's fly through the air, out of your hand, is the time you're getting hammer smashed in the face. Always keep constant control and good grips on your weapon for the best defense. When they are twirling in your fingers or the air you are being killed by a katana or any other bladed weapon.

Vanz, some of these moves are meant to develop coordination and reflexes, like when a boxer jumps rope. He wont jump rope in a fight, but it's part of the training. Plus it's fun! And also there are forms competitions in which this stuff counts, so it's worth learning. (Did I mention it's fun?)
