r.i.p. to Johnathan Larson. when i think about the fact that he never got to see his show it always makes me put more feeling just into the songs. i'm not even really on stage but i try to act as though i was on stage so that i can put more feeling into these songs. it is very sad that Johnathan never got to see his show but we honor him just by praising his show and by never forgetting what he did. I very much enjoy this interpretation, the slightly slower tempo. The trumpet figures in particular have a plaintive quality that is absent from the famous 1963 recording, and overall the brass is expositional, which is entirely correct - these figures are vital to the rest of the work.

Oh my gosh! I'm in the Elm City Girls' Choir, and sang both of the War Requiem performances last weekend. Frankly, with all due respect to Rostropovich, I didn't like this interpretation very much. It's very choppy and staccato and the women are in about three different keys because they aren't singing for long enough at a time to hear each other and stay in tune. The men are very tentative and behind the beat as well.

Almost all Broadway shows are taped their opening nights, but they are only available for viewing at the Lincoln Center Library. Some more recent shows are filmed for television through PBS Great Performances (Light in the Piazza, Company (Revival)) or are on DVD (Sondheim: Into the Woods/Sunday in the Park With George). And of course many theatergoers illegally tape shows, for example the millions of Wicked audio and video clips on youtube now.

My dad played in the pit for this show - it's so sad the originals who created it didn't get credit when they brought it back. The original rocked - movie was a travesty - this show was strong 'cause of the dancers who helped create it and the full orchestra that helped carry it years before Broadway orchestras were whittled to a synthesizer and one or two token instruments... sorry I've got to focus on the positive. But these songs were my bread and jam as a kid - love them - thank you . . .

Behind the scenes look at the 1970 recording of "Barcelona" - sung by Dean Jones and Susan Browning. From the highly recommended DVD "Company: Original Cast Album".
Dean's yawn at 1:20 is written in the script (thanks for the info, mlnreplyer) and can be heard clearly on the released cast album. It is not due to the 3am recording time as I originally described.

I corresponded personally with Patti LuPone a while ago and, while she certainly did not say she supports the clips being posted on YouTube, she expressed happiness that someone filmed the Broadway performances, saying, "That's the only footage we have of our Evita." Patti herself does not own the rights to the music, the stage production, the footage, any of it. She portrayed the character but does not own the copyright.
