I'm surprised anyone looked at his hair instead of listening to him play. An image is an image, it doesn't determine skill, and I can 100% say this guy plays cleaner and much more pleasing to the ear then Yngwie. This guy is like the Richter Svialtoslov (sp?) of guitar. Seriously.

I don't understand it, why would someone with such a developed technical and musical ability want to copy someone so much? He has as the tools need to forge his own style, yet he copies, not only YJM's guitar and color, but the amp, effects, this guy even has Yngwie's hair style, EVEN A LEOPARD WRIST BAND LIKE YJM! I was so lucky of having been 5 times in Hawaii (last in 2000) I discovered Ohta-san in 1998 after spending many hours listening hundreds of hawaiian tunes recordered by top guitar players throughout many music shops. Immediately, I bought ALL his available CDs. But this ukelele-virtuous has also performed well beyond the hawaiian music, (e.g. "I wish you love") Great video, mahalo.

Yngwie was to his better 1989 with is Trial by the Fire Live in Lenningrad wow amazing show. I really don't know how old you are, but if you were around 40 years old you'd know that when Yngwie first came out that same thing was said about him. Now, the fact that this genre of metal has matured to the point where it is harder to clearly delineate yourself from the next player doesn't mean that these guys are copying YJM. If you can actually find audio clips where the guy rips off a YJM lick note for note, then I will admit that you have something, until then they are distinct enough.

I'm not going to let you say that YJM was a rip off of blckmore,because it's very easy to discern between the two, however Katsu Ohta copies YJM in everyway possible, even down to the clothing and dressing style. I think this stems from Asian obsession with Western culture. Also, Katsu Ohta has a tremendous musical and technical talent, why waste it trying to copy someone else like this?

You are completely free to your opinion, but every issue you highlighted here (tone, style, gear, color, scalloped fingerboard) are all issues that came up about Yngwie with regards to Blackmore. I'm not dumping on Yngwie for this, cause his contribution to the music was a real milestone, but I also don't discount these guys for continuing to explore this genre of music. Their contributions should be recognized as well. Sit back and enjoy.

There are no straw mans in this argument. And honestly, if you think that YJM is that similar to Blackmore then you must be a novice. It is easy to discern a huge Blackmore influence on YJM, but Katsu Ohta just copies Yngwie's tone, style, even the same gear, guitar color even with the scalloped fingerboard, and clothing style! Ethnicity is of no concern to me,acknowledging it causes subconscious segregation.I merely referred to him as 'this asian guy' because I forgot his name at the moment.

haha. this guy plays YJM's style better than Yngwie himself anymore. after hearing Perpetual Flame, i noticed Malmsteen doesnt pull of the same perfect notes like he used to. some part were actually kinda muddy. this guy picks everything so clear.

Your straw man attacks weaken your arguement. The difference you note is pertinent only to you. I counter and state that this guy is just as distinct from Yngwie, and you think Yngwie is from Blackmore. Personally, I do believe that your opinion is heavily influenced by the fact that this guy is Asian. I would ask you to reconsider the value of these individuals and their work within this genre of music. After all, Yngwie has basically remained stagnant in his pursuit of the instrument.

No, Yngiwe was influenced heavily by Blackmore, but YJM had a more technical edge to his playing, and his music was more classically oriented that rock oriented. Being heavily influenced by someone is very different than ripping them off like this guy did to YJM. If you can't tell the difference between Blackmore and Yngwie's playing, then you are a novice.

What are you talking about? When Yngwie came out he totally stole Blackmore's persona. He posed like him, and dressed like him. Be honest here. He totally copped the crouched pose with one leg stretched out that Blackmore used to do. So, he copped the Strat, he copped his style, and he copped his musical style. So what's different between Yngwie and these Asian guys? This arguement just doesn't hold water. It's just good music; listen and be happy.

i guess its hard for anyone to play in the neo-classical style. since yngwie and jason becker pioneered the genre. they left very little to come up with. and since his look and guitar are almost exactly like yngwie's i can see how people say he copies him. this guy is great but yngwie is much better=P

The bottem line is you're either good or you're not. This guy Katsu is incredible. I have 2 Ark Storm CD's. His solo's are crazy. Katsu's technique is flawless. He can flat out play. End of story.

Bach and Paganini didn't play guitar though... white stratocasters... with scalloped fretboards... and marshall amps... and had big fluffy poodle-hair... and Bach and Paganini didn't start popping up after Rising Force came out either. This guy isn't that bad though, he's mostly playing blues licks with occassional neoclassical tones. Absolutely horrible showmanship though.
