aaahhhh thanks for filling me in SAO. Funny but from the age of 6 'til I was 12 I was living on Crete Street Estate (council houses) but I reckon I turned out alright. i'm from germany and i lived in oldham for about a year as i was teaching in blue coat school there. well, it is not the most beautiful place in the world but i liked it. especially the people there were friendly and i never was treated like "the nazi german" or something. sometimes i even miss this city, then i browse the net and end up in a oldham dia show :-)

I live in a set of Council flats in Oldham. people callCouncil flats but we've only ever had one robbery since they were built and that was over 30 years ago. Where can boast that? Kids around here are kids. There's no hanging around the off licence drinking. They play football and kerby etc. I was very pleasantly surprised as I moved from somewhere considered nice (kids were awful and the adults weren't any better) to here. A place is only what you make it.

After the goal, an enormous guy standing behind me LIFTED me up, because I wasn't bouncing up and down! if anything, the verve were unwise and naive to use a sample-they should have hired an orchestra to do their own version of the melody, or altered it slightly, thus circumventing copywright loop holes that could be used against them. the split of profits should have been 50/50, not credits saying that jagger/ richards wrote 'bittersweet symphony' (an ashcroft title). very misleading.

another irony is that andrew loog oldham split from the stones as their manager - and then tried to cash in by hiring an orchestra to do an album of instrumental covers of songs he never wrote,such as the above (yeah,really original);he is clearly the real 'huckster' of the whole affair,as well as Allan Klein,who reneged on his deal with the Verve and took all the profits(the Stones themselves are blameless -they even commented that they liked BS and were not bothered by its use of the samples).

they did not try to pass off the song as their own. they had permission and the sample was cleared. In no interviews did they claim the melody as their own. then they added dozens of tracks of original music, lyrics, etc, and fleshed out the arrangement. considering that the entire ALBUM that the song is from,Urban Hymns-was a multi-million seller,with FOUR hit singles(BS was not even the highest charting single from the album in the UK), they hardly got famous on someone else's 'originality' .

The Verve in interviews tried to pass this song off as their idea when all they did was take a complete melody, add lyrics, and modernize the production. If they let the world know that's what they did then no problem. They didn't and tried to pass it off as their own genius. They got famous on someone else's originality, simple (their own songs didn't bring them to fame).

The have the same structure, but one is an orchestral work, like you know, classical music (maybe you've heard of it), and the other one a mid-90 pop hymn. Thanks for the great show. The only way it could have been better was if you had shown the house I lived in from 1973 to 1980.(93 wellington rd.) Brilliant shots of Oldham's Big Ben though in Werneth School. You missed out Hulme Grammar School!and the "Coalhills" Maybe you can catch those in the future eh. I think there are significant problems in Oldham, and yes, a large number of them are caused by 'ethnics' but I would say that the perverse benefits system this country has in place actually encourages their behaviour. Oldham is very dear to my heart but unless change is brought in, and quick, it is in serious danger of major decline - especially now that the good times are over. The time has come to put a stop to this, i predict that 2008 will be the start of things to come, we will see a massive rise in bnp support, They wont be so smug then, May the 1st watch this space.
