her spins are great. notice she never moves off point. shes probably one of the most underrated skaters of all time because of what she accomplished. she's more than just a pretty face.

You are wrong here too. I like Manley alot but her short program was overscored as well. With her own easier combination of only a triple salchow, and her obvious bobble on a camel spin she deserved no higher then 5th place in the short. Her figures were also questionable and I doubt they were any better then Witt's. She won the long program over Witt as she deserved to but not the title with a mediocre short and less then great figures herself.

You are a joke as usual. Debi's skate in Calgary sucked royally and her even getting bronze was a gift courtesy of some bogus scores. You are arguing she should have beaten Witt, LOL! The only one held up in Calgary was Debi Thomas.

Witt was a great skater.I appreciate her glamourous style & the fact that she was the STRONGEST competitor. but with skating skills, I don't think she was the best.Back then Figures were important & she was terrible!Judges helped her there too! Her jumps were clean but not textbook & she rarely attempted the more difficult jumps/combinations her rivals did. Dick Button once said that her line & positions weren't all that first rate. But you obviously think Witt the best-I understand.

IMO, Katarina wasn't more helped by eastern judges than US and canadian skaters were helped by western judges. Moreover, on the 88 Olympics, only three of the nine judges were eastern judges.

Witt was the most consistent competitor of her era & deserved her titles. I agree she was artistically strong but many believe she received favortism from Eastern block judges who favored her style unfairly. Technique shouldn't be subjective & in Witt's case her deficits were simply ignored.Her Figures were terrible yet they were often bumped up to help her succeed.Her jumps & spins werent first rate & this too was often overlooked. The bad thing about this sport is its subjectivity

I respect all these athletes and their work. But sorry Debie and Liz where objectively behind Katarina artistically. Debie did several mistakes.Manley did a good program but with no choregraphy and no jump combination. On the other hand,katarina proposed a real olympic program, with clean technical difficulties, real choregraphy and soul. You can try to write again the story but IMO there is no doubt that katarina deserved to win.

Yes, there is no comparison. Witt's Carmen was not a true skater's performance.She didnt challenge herself in any way, shape or form as a SKATER.She relied on poses & emoting-pretty, but not much substance. Debi didnt skate well in her Long but her Carmen showed passion & energy! AND she challenged herself technically.And artistically! Manley was glorious that night & way better than Witt.She showed the sheer joy of skating & delivered technically. Witt's didn't deserve to win IMO.

Yes katarina wins due to her artistic hability. But it is not shoking. She was not especially helped by judges at this level. Look at Witt, Manley and Thomas programs : there is no comparison !

At Calgary, Witt's Figures-always weak-were controvercially judged higher than many thought accurate.Her Short Program, judged on TECHNIQUE-was weak.She performed an easy jump combination in comparison with all her closest rivals.Her spins were so-so.Yet the Eastern Block judges ODDLY gave her the Short win via artistic marks.This helped her to edge the true Long Program winner, Manley, for the title. Witt was solid, but always got "help" from the judges. My opinion.We can disagree.

Obviously, with the end of compulsory figures, Skating has changed. So you cannot compare this program with nowaday's technical requirements. Nevertheless, Witt deserved to win. During these last 20 years, I've never found another Olympic skating champion with a such charisma, passion and artistry. This is why she is The true ICON of her sport !

I uderstand your opinion & no doubt Debi skated a poor Long & rightfully lost the comp. But I maintain that Witt's Carmen was technically unambitious & lazy.And her "artistry" was alot of still (or slow) posing, gazing into the audience. Her performance was gaudy & unskatesman-like yet the mostly eastern block judges favored her & questionably bumped up her marks artistically-giving her the win.We can simply disagree. Without the discipline of Figures, Singles skating is now a joke.

Katarina did a clean technical program with a great artistry and she managed the stress of the competition. This was the difference with Debi. I think that this program is a "Classic of Skating" with a real dramatical emotion that we don't find often in nowaday's competition. So no matter how many triple axel, flip or lutz there are !

This was a slow, posey program with unchallenging technical elements.Witt didn't think she'd win but hoped to launch her "acting" career--which never happened. Had Debi done a clean program she would've won & this routine would be remembered as Witt's lazy, glamour routine.Debi didn't & now Witt fanatics try to immortalize this gaudy program as a work of art.Maybe it is, but it wasn't truly a STRONG skaters performance.The judges awarded her 5.9's for posing & preening.That's artistry!

people skating is not just based on jumps...yes kat only did 2 sals and 2 toes, but this performance is one of the greatest in skating history. she couldn't even be touched by the other "girls"....and def not liz's clown like performance despite the lutz.

In a way her last Olympic win was one of her least impressive wins ever. At many times in her career she was nearly unbeatable. Here in the free skate Manley did beat her, many feel Ito should have, many feel Thomas would have had she gone clean, and many feel Kadavy should have had she gone clean.
