I had recently introduced my husband to the Steep Canyon Rangers & told him about Steve Martin playing with them...he had no idea SM was a musician, so I showed him this video first & he almost fell over when he started pickin that banjo...he thought he was serious when he said, "I'll try"...and then he busts right into it. I don't have inside info on why Carl quit early but he probably got shafted. When Elvis Ricky and the Everlys invaded country music the only stars who survived were Marty Ray, Webb, and then along came Buck and possum Radio quit playing Carl and Red Foley. Red only had one chart hit after 1955, except for duets with Kitty. Carl continued recording as long as he could, but had to accept the writing on the wall, retiring to his horse ranch. Today he cries about it. All the way to the bank.

Thanks for posting these. Many a Saturday night I sat up in the back row at the Ryman watching these great performers do their shows. Late at night after Prime Time radio on WSM they changed Stars about every 15 minutes. Each 15 minute segment had different sponsers. Thanks, again for the memories.

love this one. iris made 2 fantastic albums. she gave her mum a track on the first album. after the first albums she was quiet. i assume she changed labels or management. someone here asks why she isn't no. 1 country. the only reason can be poor management. she is a rare talent. if in doubt go back to the infamous angel album. sheer, pure talent.

Iris also figures prominently in Transatlantic Sessions 3- 2-dvd set recorded in 2007. Unfortunately, so far these dvds are available only in PAL video format, and many/most dvd players here in the USofA can't play them. They can be recoded. What's in a name? From here, Iris seems more traditional/folk than "country." Still love her.

A short film from an early black and white Mickey Mouse crated by Walt Disney, released on march 28, 1929. It was the second Mickey's short film cartoon on this year. In this film Mickey Mouse plays the music from "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2" by Franz Lisz, and include "Yankee Doodle" and "Carmen" by George Bizet musical pieces. Mickey Mouse is the owner of a small theater.

This is just okay. Mickey Mouse shorts got A LOT better after this. There doesn't seem to be a solid idea or story, just a bunch of random tropes about classical music. My favorite part about this is mixing and blurring of the line between music and sound effects.

Since Taylor has made her transition into pop, she has more recognition outside of the States but her 15 minutes of fame will pass. Carrie had one goal after winning Idol, to record country music. First of all, that "motel" existed in place with a theme park that was one of the jewels and centers of that city. Since tearing down the theme park to build another LAME mall, the "motel"'s occupancy rate has remained a steady 5% lower. Tearing down that mall and bringing back Opryland is the best thing they could do for that "motel". Idiot.

I HATE THAT MALL. More than half of Nashville hates that mall. I wouldn't care if they bulldozed the entire thing and burned the rubble. That place is the product of greed, and tore down what was once a lovely family theme park. Now Nashville has NO theme parks, and a way below par mall. I work at Opry Mills mall. They aren't going to tear it down. It would actually cost more to destroy it than it would to make the repairs. That mall makes millions of dollars per day and the major companies like Bass Pro Shops, Regal Cinemas, Gap, etc will not be willing to lose the biggest cash cow in middle TN.

If they haven't already done so .. some corporation somewhere should go about issuing a whole series of Grand Ole Opry "Best Of" documentaries. There'd be more than sufficient demand to warrant it - similar to what Shenachie have done so well, in re-issuing an 8 volume collection of Lester & Earl + The Foggy Mountain Boys' famous TV shows of the 50s & 60s. I guess, though, that much depends on damned copyright / intellectual property issues. But boy it'd be great to see it happen !!

I think it would be really neat if comedy was still a regular feature of the Grand Ole Opry. Of course the main focus always has been, and always should be, good country music. Still, including country comedians like Minnie Pearl increased the variety of entertainment that the Opry had to offer.

I watched this & bawled my eyes out. I understand that respect and true love that Craig has. When I was 4, I promised my grandfather (a local guitar legend) that I would do 2 things before he was too old or no longer around: Take him to the Grand Ole Opry, and / or play on the stage. In September of 2003, My grandfather witnessed my proposal to my wife privately from the balcony of the Grand Ole Opry house during a Johnny Cash tribute show. On May 10, 2006, I sang behind Jeff Bates on the stage.

He probably knows almost every country song on the radio or recording today. Probably the majority of all the older country that I have ever heard. You notice that on the Grand Ole Opry it's a very raw sound, there's no reverb or anything, it really puts the voice to the test I have noticed alot of good musicians don't sound as good on the Opry stage. I think it's interesting that "chosen 11979" is actually into heavy metal music - I have been a country music fan and have watched and listened to the Opry for years and I think it's great they have inducted a young talented singer like Carrie Underwood ! If you want a country musician that can relate with rural America, she is horrible. I wish country music would divide into: a poppy Carrie Morningwood genre, which would highlight Rascal Fags, Quief Urban, the rest of the fruity tutes; and a genre that sings about cowboy boots, farming, ranching, and the authentic rural American, which would highlight artists such as Trent Williamson, Ryan Bingham, Robert Earl Keen, Kevin Fowler, and Boland and the straggles!
