This was a great speech and a great performance. I have seen positive messages at funerals, and this was a positive one- he's trying to inspire the people to not settle for the way the city is, but to work to change it-- and that's what leaders do. It was an appropriate speech in this instance, and he paid total respect for the dead child and the congregation. Well done.

I'm trying not to be biased because Pacino ended up playing the role in the end but his screen tests really are way better than the others. There's much more depth to them and subtlety. De Niros screen tests for the part of Sonny are really interesting as well. Check them out.

I see your point, I'll confess that it was a while ago since I saw it but I do remember that it was their prank on the headmaster that lead up to all this. He, and his car got drenched in paint or whatever. It was humiliating, it was insulting AND it was a damage of his property. Lt. Col. Frank Slade, in my opinion, is one of the greatest roles Al Pacino has ever played. Scent Of A Woman is one of my most favorite films of all time and he fucking nailed that part! To play a blind person without looking like your just staring at something is no easy task. This being said, Denzel Washington in Malcolm X was fucking incredible. I would have been satisfied as well if he got the Oscar because his portrayal of Malcolm X was amazing. At least he won one for Training Day!

He was excellent in "Scent of a Woman", no denying that. But he has much better performances in his catalogue, including GF1 and GF2 (both of which rank in my top 10 of all-time, GF2 possibly my #1.) Not to mention "Dog Day Afternoon" and several others. But the Academy is maddeningly flawed. After all, they finally gave Denzel his best actor Oscar for "Training Day", and while he's great in that, both "Malcolm X" and "The Hurricane" are a bit more worthy of best actor Oscars IMO.

I was still living in Hawai'i when they were 0-12. When June Jones came he molded this team from the bottom of the pit to become the best in the conference.
