Car & Driver has a video on here comparing the GTR, Porsche GT2, Viper ACR & Z06. The Corvette, which is getting a bit 'long in tooth' compared to these competetors was a 4th place finisher. No one can deny its world beating value, racing pedigree & punch you in the back performance. But a professional got (gps measured) 0-60 times of 3.8 from the Z06 vs 3.7 from the GT2. I'll add that they had IDEAL CONDITIONS. Look up the video. It isn't hard to find. Did the race here look .1 close? No.

I like porsche and all but this is ugly! The back looks like the back of a turtle. The front looks like a ferrari 599 so it looks good. I think porsche should just stick to coupes and there one suv the cayenne. You can tell posche is trying to expand its markets since there are less buyers looking for coupes nowadays because of the economy and stuff so people need more of an economical car.

i got a mk1.5 mr2. i attribute its great handling to being built on a lotus chassis and having a lotus suspension engineer designing the suspension. the nsx is the only other japanese car thats cool but even thats a bit nerdy. as soon as i get thru college it'll be all german engineering for my cars! but my gen mr2 is the only mid engine car that blends in with traffic. that has its benifits.

So, in a true boxer at TDC/BDC, all crank journal centres AND cylinder bore centres are in the same plane. The boxer term relates to the pugilist but is also misunderstood. Some think it represents two boxers facing each other and making sort of reciprical punching movements. It actually compares the movement of just the 2 pistons of 2 opposing cylinders to the the habit of 1 boxer punching his two gloves together often seen prior to start of a bout in a sort of "priming" ritual.

Ferrari for instance as I think has been said, never made a boxer engine for a road car. They used boxer engines only in racing. They key to a true boxer is that the crankjournals are all in one plane and so referred to as flat plane or single plane crank. If you remove the crank and sit it on the bench all Journals (main and rod) lie flat on the bench.

Hi Sensinyou, the 917 engine is related to the 911 engine sort of once removed. Forerunner to the 917 was the 908/909 series which used a flat 8. It was effectively an extended 911 in magneseum. The 917 was a new block design with a 2 piece crank. In original 4.5 ltr from it also used the 911 piston/rod. Once the 917 engine had been expanded to 4.9/ 5.0 ltr there was no physical link to the 911 The lineage in design is still there. The flat 6 engine then returned in the 936, 956 & 962

No, you're wrong! A boxer engine has a crankshaft with 1 exclusive crankpin for every con rod. The crankpins of 2 opposed pistons are shifted by 180 degrees, this means, the 2 pistons move in opposite directions - the 911 has such an engine. In a flat 12 engine like in the 917 or in all Ferrari "Boxers", including the Testarossa (in fact, these Ferrari engines aren't boxers!), 2 opposing pistons share THE SAME crankpin, just like in every V-engine - both pistons move into the same direction.

where did you hear about a 7:15 GT2 lap time? When Porsche tested it with stock everything, it did a 7:34. I'm not saying that the Carrera GT is worse, than the ZR1, just a little slower... I'd have the Carrera GT instead of the ZR1, because it was engineered better in general, I think.

The EVO 800 is fully street legal. The ZR1 seems to have 638hp and not 628hp as I said. At Nürburgring the ZR1 did a 7:26, the GT a 7:28 but with way less torque due to no charger. So it's the better car when taking it down to the car only. And the GT2 which has a turbo but only 542hp did it in 7:15. Also a statement I think. The EVO 800 was not there yet I guess but calculating on the GT2 time the Evo should do it easily under 7 minutes.

Yes, but this ZR1 Corvette with its LS9 engine is a very limited line. It has 807Nm and 628hp. The 997 GTR EVO 800 R has 950Nm and 800hp out of just 3.6L and 6 cylinders. And on track it would make the gap even bigger. The 980 (Carrera GT) is still faster on tracks because GT and Enzo are simply the better cars. I also think that the GT 40 from Ford has a good chance to beat or keep up with the LS9 powered ZR1.

Doesn't anyone else find the idea of this car kind of ridiculous? I mean, it isn't a real Porsche! It's got 4 doors, and the motor's in the wrong place. The 924/8, 944, and 968 were bad enough, but, at least they were proper sports cars. Leave the 4x4s to Rover and concentrate on REAR engined sports cars! It's what Porsche is best at.

Clearly nothing wrong with the handling, so the engine fits just fine in the back. I would have liked it better if it had more of a GT look to it, though. Of course you can customize it. If you can afford this car, you can afford to invest in it as well.

If I head the money to Buy an exotic like a Lambo, Ferrari, Audi, Porsche, or BMW, all high end models. I think I would go with a Porsche 911 turbo with AWD. Why? it is fast, not the fastest but fast enough, and overall it is PRACTICAL! The 911 Turbo has the old porsche look that is timeless. the 430 is sweet to, but to much BS to deal with.
