It's extremely rare that you'd find a bassoon in a high school marching band, I know if we had one, that's would I'd learn. For now, I play the clarinet. I can kinda play flute, baritone, and trombone too. But I really wanna learn xylophone and bassoon :D

A double reed is when there's two pieces of cane. Like, you know how a clarinet reed is one layer of cane? Well a double reed is two pieces of cane tied together...google an image and you'll see what I'm talking about. Hope that helped. :)

I love this piece in part because every instrument is important. Both of the violinists are (nearly) equals, as opposed to, say, Haydn's "Lark" in which you have a violin solo with three-part accompaniment. The viola is an equal player in what is normally a violin's game. My only gripe is with the camera work: would it kill them to let us see the violist once in a while?

The 1954 version together with Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk is unsurpassed. It is what got me into Jazz in the first place. (Prestige LP 7109) There is no video of it though. Despite the audio and video problems this one is still quite enjoyable.

Behjoh, Thanks for posting this and the other tunes. I am a huge fan of MJQ. I met Milt Jackson back in the mid 90s. He used to play at Yoshi's in Oakland and all of the musicians would stay at this little hotel by lake Merrit. Anyway, a guy I knew was the head chef at the hotel, and Milt was a pretty good cook, he would stop by the kitchen and make pineapple pies. I miss his (Milt's)sound.

Now that's more honest and well thought-out. The 'wannabe' thing rubbed me the wrong way; I don't think he wants to be anyone but himself. Really, I'd say your complaint stems from a more general trend in jazz: Everybody's starting to sound the same, with a few notable exceptions (eg. Meldhau). The tradition of learning from records engrains the same sounds into every player's mind, so everyone ends up with the same influences. Don't knock Stanko Quartet, knock the existing jazz pedagogy.

I did not suggest that. It looks like my comment got a -4. He is a good pianist; better in other recordings. I am a jazz pianist myself and must say again that his solo here is very commonplace. It is a boring and overdone vamp. If you guys wanna experience intensity in solo piano playing you should check Hancock, Jarrett, Corea and Brad Melhdau. I like Stanko Quartet in some occasions. Not on this one though

What do you mean? He's just not overplaying. It's intense in feeling and emotion. Besides, you can't seriously suggest that Herbie's style is the only valid one, or that he's the only influence on this guy.

As for musical education, I'm not formally trained, but I do know a bit of theory and having played guitar and listened a lot to (different kinds of) music for the past 20 years have enabled me to voice an educated opinion. Well I'm sorry you feel that way. I enjoy the hell out of his playing. Maybe you're just not musically educated enough to enjoy what he's doing and that could be understandable. Do I play? Overrated in the fact that his legend or pioneer status obstructs people in judging his music on its own terms. Once again, all I've said is I find his soloing repetitive and very little melodic (which is even observable, not just subjective opinion); however, I love his rhythm playing. Do you play?

Overrated in the fact that he helped create the art of flatpicking? I wouldn't consider a legend overrated. He may not be as good as what is out their today (that's debatable) but that doesn't all of a sudden diminish his accomplishments to now being overrated. You can like who you like, that's your right, but don't be a smart ass punk like the rest of them on this site or most of us won't care to give two shits about your opinion.

When they started out, there weren't that many bluegrass guitar soloists, so of course he was a great inspiration. But they have been able to incorporate so many other interesting ideas in their solos which I feel Tony Rice hasn't. To me Tony Rice is a little like the Eric Clapton of acoustic guitar. People say Eric is God, the best, and whatever - but he just ain't.

I'm talking from a listener's perspective. What I can produce is not the point. I've never said anything about Tony's skills - he's tremenduously good - but compared with other pros (Scott Nygaard, Russ Barenberg for instance), I personally find his playing less interesting because of repetitiveness and focus on licks instead of melody. That's just my opinion, and others may very well disagree.

Try booker's 'That's it' record also. Horace Parlan on piano and they play 'poinciana' and 'speak low'. Coltrane is obviously way beyond everything else (in any art form, ever), but Booker was also a unique and singular voice. The 'tartness' of his sound has never really been approached by any tenor player i have heard. There are pitch-worlds only Booker Ervin has been to. The record with Dexter Gordon is pretty cool also.

by virtue of how many notes he plays, i think he's thought of every conceivable permutation for this melody. some of them absolutely extraordinary, some of them perplexing and atonally dissatisfying in the best way. and sometimes it straight sounds like he's squeezing a canadian goose. in the end, this guy has blown some of the best lines in the history of music.

There's a couple of Albert Ayler records (get his first records, "Spiritual Unity"-style is what Coltrane thought was better than him in '65), Eric Dolphy with and without Coltrane was great, some of the Mingus records are incredible. Pharoah Sanders was never better than when he was with Coltrane. Peter Brotzmann is the best modern free jazz saxophonist. I'm obsessed with this stuff and I listen to 85% Coltrane. Get all the Coltrane records 61-67.

Miles Davis gave Trane his first soprano and it's only fitting I think that he went on to make this music. This is as close as you can possibly get to free jazz, to these ears. He did go on to make music with his wife which crosses the line from music to sounds. But this music has a power and magic to it that few musicians ever captured...it soars!
