I have loved Martha's playing since I first heard her Chopin preludes when I was learning them. I was luck enough to hear her play Prokofiev 3 live in Toronto a few years ago - I had tears in my eyes during the 2nd movement - not something I usually expect from Prokofiev. She is uniquely special and most people talk about her phenomenal technique, but listen to her cantabile with a melody - that is what makes her truly special - not the splash or dash.

Absolutely extraordinary! This concerto has to be among the most powerful ever written - I always feel like my heart is going to explode with emotion and ecstasy during the last few minutes of it. Incredible.

Stunning! Even though I prefer the ossia cadenza, Argerich makes a superb case for the normal one. Her empathy with Chailly and the orchestra is superb.....the eye contact even in the final passages typifies the superb, almost chamber-music relationship between soloist and "the band." What a woman!

This is a video of same amazing recording that's available on the Phillips disc isn't it? She makes the same slip at 3:15 (is it a slip?). Simply the best peformance of this piece ever heard, I just don't understand some of her detractors other than pettyness and/or jelousy. She looks almost exausted, physically and emotionally, near the end. Legend.

I think good editors try to keep the average viewer, rather than the expert, interested and excited. The view of a drum (exciting!) was very timely to get the average viewer up and involved ahead of the climax of the performance. I thought it was good editing - And, no, I'm not an editor.

She's an amazing pianist she just seems to struggle to follow a conductor. I'm pretty sure she did not mean to be late there and it was not her interpretation. If you watch her other recordings of concerti, she tends to run away from the orchestra a bit in tempo. Still a great performance though.

If Youtube has give anything to the world it is the opportunity to wannabe critics to chastise great artists like little bureaucratic bookworms scurrying about looking for minor and insignificant inconsistencies that make nice hiding places for pedants to cozy into and play the musical authority game. I prefer Martha's later, maturer recordings of Rach 3. This one, while stellar, is a little choppy in the "touch" starting at 1:22 in the faster technical sections. The phrasing seems a bit too much "in the box" and metronomic in a way without that real "whisk" from the start to the end of the phrase. The singing unisono in the beginning and cantabile between 4 and 6 minutes is to die for though. Like Dave Matthews, she just has "so much to say" in those glorious moments.

I got it from a friend at camp this summer. I hadn't even heard of Sokolov before, let alone this particular recording. It's a bootleg, and I don't know where he got it. Maybe a friend of a friend. At least the first movement is available somewhere online though... And a Proms audience would explain why the crowd goes nuts at the end, but after a performance like that, who wouldn't?

ha ha! amazing that you mention that performance, from what, 1995 or something? I recorded it on cassette tape. Yes, he does actually top the Argerich (which I think is still the best commercial recording out there), especially the attack in the coda of the finale. Of course the Proms audience is one of the world's rowdiest. Where did you get your copy?

martha is just amazing... this whole movement is a blurry tornado of emotions, but i think it is a little too delicate for what rachmaninoff had envisioned. so i will stick with horowitz... martha, i hope to hear you again soon:)

I'd like to think he'd have sight-read it then leapt into the air with admiration at the end, like he apparently did with Grieg's piano concerto on being introduced to it! :-) Singular performance by Argerich, this, mind- it almost pains me to say that I'd never even HEARD of her since a couple of months back; she is now my new favourite pianist by a long shot.

i totally agree, she's pure genius's and you'll notice that in her recent years, she's mellowed, and there's so much more interpretatino in her work. i was lucky enough to see her in london last year, and was just amazing experience.

Extraordinary. This probably has to be my new "favourite" interpretation of the Rach 3 finale (although admittedly I am only familiar with Ashkenazy's and Horowitz's recitals). Can this woman be human!! :-) Have always adored the recapulation (well, variation, I suppose) of the theme from the first movement (cellos at 6m56s); then the desperately plaintive one at 7m26s (a semitone higher than in the first movement); then the insane bit at 8m36s lol! Cheers for posting this- really! ;-)

but see then you are controlled by the lessons and the teacher and there is a lack of freedom aswell. Your just built up in an image, rather than just picking up a guitar and learning from watching, which you could argue is the same thing as being taught and thats not always true i mean all the guitarists you named are very unique musicians. I just respect people more that have learnt on there own, and i prefer those who have taught themselves to those who have had lessons.

a lack of natural talent if you have lessons? what about Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Slash, Joe Satriani, even Jimi Hendrix had a helping hand from his uncle... its just a passing of knowledge and ideas. nothing to do with "talent" or natural abilities, with anything you have to practise to get good, and lessons are only really a method for controlled practise, and "correct" practise, in the sence of what the teacher would believe... just my thought :)

Well he has had lessons since he was 7, and if he is only that good then it suggest to me a lack of natural talent. That is just speaking on the behalf of a self taught guitarist, I think if you need lessons you don't have much talent.Don't get me wrong he can shred all over my ass. Also playing fast has nothing to do with talent, anyone can play fast if they practice enough. To make something sound like music is a talent, which i beleive mattrach has with some of his original songs.
