This is definitely Rameau's best aria, Minkowski is the greatest conductor who ever lived and Mireille Delunsch does such a magnificent job (the acting, the singing, her timing and sence of humor - everything is perfect) that I cannot help it but consider this one of the most amazing videos I have ever seen.

I haven't heard Minkowski's version, but I own Goodman's and Gardiner's, and I find I like the one from the 60's by the Collegium Aureum the best of all. The Collegiums' performance is perhaps a little romantisized, but it suits the music perfectly, much more than does a purely objective and impersonal approach. No one knows how the music was actually played back then, but I'd like to think it was more like the Collegium's performance than most of the current authentic ones.

Thank you for sharing this Rameau masterpiece but the Minkowski version is better ...et pas de peu . Gardiner interprete Rameau assez platement . Minkowski est flamboyant et a capté tout l'esprit de la musique française de cette période .

I bought this video. It is the ONLY Rameau on DVD that I cannot recommend. The chief liability of the set, not so evident in this chorus, is the male singers: intonation problems, horribly aspirated passagework, exaggerated portrayals. The audio versions by Minkowski and (especially) Christie are much to be preferred.

haha, lo sé, pero no hay una diferencia tan grande, puede que si al final de la vida de Rameau(recuerdese la querella de los bufones), pero al principio no tanto, pues la musica de Lully seguía muy viva y admirada, la de compositores franceses(y no franceses) del barroco tardío que tuvieron influencias de la musica de Lully, por eso no creo que sea tan descabellado compararlos.

You are, of course, correct. we don't know what the artist intended. But there is just too much in Minkowsky's performance that contradicts what we do, in fact, know about XVIII century performance. I generally like Minkowsky's treatments of baroque opera, but this time it is a bit too much.

regards to modern "historically inspired performance". My favourite performance however is of the EBS, they played it in French Ordinaire instead of 12 Tone Equal temperament and the result was spectacular. Apart from the brilliant fiery response of the strings and unity of tone the EBS have, those woodwind trills at the end with the wide diatonic semitone in the upper part were almost Stravinskian... shame I can't find a recording, if they've even recorded it at all.

The main qualm I have with this recording is the size of the string section and the technique used, which results in a lot of white "bow" noise, and so it lacks precision and also a synergy in tone with the woodwind, which instead sort of lie on top of the texture. The continuo is also very indistinct. I do think the muted drums need some support from reverberation as would have happened in a theatre. However I thinkit's very dangerous to presume to know what Rameau or any composer intended with

This is certainly very impressive, but it's not really Rameau. Minkowsky's recording in an echo chamber is more showmanship than musicianship. The Rousset version is undoubtedly closer to what Rameau intended and, at the same time makes very clear how musically inventive and daring Rameau was.

You want synchronised swimming style "smiles" and wafting around? Did you listen to the expression in the musical performance? One of the great joys of most good "period" performances is that they play with real musical expression and rhythm - unlike still too many "mainstream" orchestras/conductors (NOT all) who smooth out all the rhythm and mulch the expression into romantic pap.

True. The main thing is to promote the use of YouTube by makers of opera DVDs. Face it, opera lovers are not numerous. Opera is a delicate thing constanty verging on extinction. One way to support opera: spread its power via video excerpts such as this. The Viacom suit is bad for opera. After seeing Del Monaco's Pagliacci on VAI, I bought a DVD and then two others, sent to a grateful father and a friend.

I did indeed buy the whole thing and absolutely love it. Without this video, there is no way I would have purchased the thing. Consumers of opera DVD's are not a huge market! That's why music companies should welcome You Tube.

I too, detest modernization of opera productions, but somehow everytime I've seen a French production like this one for example, it seems to work.

Its a shame they had to go and ruin it with this idiotic staging and choreography. I want to watch it, but it's just got too much tasteless stuff going on. What a turn-off. Rameau's music is great, though. Good thing he didn't live to see this.

This is a great performance by Les Artes Florissants and all of participaters, I have this DVD at home and the whole opera takes about 3 hours and I couldn´t stop watching the video until the end!!! It is glamorous and deliricious and you´re never bored. Rameau is a musical miracle!

S'il s'agit des Cyclopes ouraniens,Brontès (Tonnerre),Stéropès (Éclair)et Argès(Foudre), il faut reconnaître que cette pièce est bien plus que de la virtuosité gratuite, mais plutôt un tableau de la force tellurique de ces êtres qui ont participé à renverser Ouranos puis Cronos. Merci à la claveciniste de prendre tous ces risques pour évoquer la violence et la puissance monstrueuses de ces êtres !!!

sorry, but I think it quite denatures a little the song as I know it. She plays the rapid parts a bit too fast and the slowest parts a bit too slow. I do not know if it is me but it is my feeling for the first half part. Second part.. is incredibly executed with perfection and magnificence
