I have to say, I think the DLR band from Eat Em & Smile (DLR + Vai, Sheehan and Bissonette) is musically tighter and more exciting than pretty much any Van Halen lineup. Yeah, Eddie on VH1, 2 and 1984 is probably better than Vai at any point in his career, but Sheehan was such a great bassist at this time than EVH was trying to replace Michael Anthony with him. As to drummers, probably a little to Biss, though noone is going to mistake either for Neil Pert anytime soon. Dave way over Sammy.

Yeah Hartford, I could not agree more. I do love Van Halen with David Lee Roth, made some FANTASTIC music, but damn, Hagar just has one of the most unbelievable voices ever. His range is just incredible. In short, I would rather hear Hagar sing, but see Dave perform. They should just have Hagar singing and have Dave on stage dancing around. Truly, the best of both worlds!

But that wave is due to something new & fresh coming out & with copycats following it, not due the times. I think I know what you mean. I was reading critics' opinions on the Booker Prize and what it currently represents, and the feeling was that we have LOTS of good writers at the moment but no one really to match the Americans when it comes to national(ist) portrayals. However, there was a theme amongst several of them (and I don't think it was just wishful thinking/romantic yearning) that Britain is on the brink of a surge of new writers - given that we have proportionally more writers than ever.

As an Englishman I struggle to identify with the potrait of nationalism a lot of the US greats depict. I'm an avid reader but I'm often left jealous towards the US readers that connect with these amazing novels. Mailer was more a brutish poly-math who never found his lasting balance as a novelist. He was, at times, Capote without the estrogen. Roth is the living master, whose out put in the last 12 years has been extraordinary. Pynchon vanished after the Rainbow. the original sky guitars are quite a bit older than 10 years ago - uli was using them on his "firewind" album of 1981 - one of my friends near L.A. was commissioned to emergency repair one of them before a concert and i actually got to touch it. it had 32 frets. when you get up that high on the neck it is impossible to manipulate so the frets were located at every other fret location - see what i am saying? very difficult to master!

thanks, the post enabled me to reflect on some things that we as psych workers tend to do: impose our techniques on involuntary participants. This rhythm stuff is definately psych work that may not work well in an audience in which a participant is externalizing alot of unreflected aggression.
