He also didn't mention the use of technology to solve our problems. Keep in mind though, and Diamond made this point in the book, that nowadays every country affects other ones because of globalization.

I think societies collapse from awful comb-overs and elitist accents...
By: isegoria1. on 21 Nov 08, 04:14:46
Every time I see one of these guys with a pathetic comb over I ask myself why don't they just shave their head? He would go from crazy looking to a serious looking person. WTF?!?!?! Damn it - It looks like seaweed strangling an Ostrich egg.

I once Jared his book, I was really disappointed. He discussed a series of environmental problems such as global warning and mining waste in Montana. But he didn't focus on the fact that some of environmental problems are more problematic than others. I think that the secret behind foreseeing and acting is to be able to judge which problems are the important ones. This lack of judgement disappointed me, so I wrote and angry comment to his video :)
By: Animalll2003lll. on 18 Nov 08, 23:32:37
come on-- of course. ?? what are you tring to say with this anyways. what happens at a local level can also happen at a global level. for example: global warming, and global oil depletion. that's 2 dangerous elements for our modern 'global civilisation'. we have to manage this ok,and we can sure learn stuff from Diamond's work on societies at a local level. an important aspect of societies collapse is how come people didn't foresee and act? people have habits, and don't always think too much.

glasses on, glasses off; glasses on, glasses off.

I am also into environmentalism, but Jared needs a sense of proportions. It is not like Monatana is about to die out from hunger. In his book Jared mentions that Haiti has massive environmental problems. I am ready to believe this, but at the end of the day that is a local problem rather than a global one. The same goes for the Greenland Norse and the Easter Islanders. We cannot make a difference unless we insist to keep our sense of proportions.

We need to encourage competition and we need government out of our lives. What do you think freedom means? It means we are responsible for ourselves, not for each other. There is no freedom when the govt regulates your life. You become a walking zombie. Socialists are tools of the mega corporations they claim to hate. They are so goddamn motherfucking clueless. Republicans and democrats are both socialist parties, and Washington is one big corporate orgy.
By: behindtheparadigm. on 14 Nov 08, 04:42:49
To shift even more of the burden to the rich ensures the consolidation of the middle and lower classes into one huge lower class. The rich people will save money during a bad economy. The only way out of this economy is FREEDOM not SECURITY. Everyone knows the Ben Franklin quote that (paraphrased) 'he who sacrifices liberty for security will receive and deserves neither.' He wasn't just blowing smoke up our asses. When the govt subsidizes you, they own you, and quality of life diminishes.
By: behindtheparadigm. on 14 Nov 08, 04:38:04
We already have a heavily regulated society. More regulations will solve nothing. It is the regulations that set the standards that give rise to the mega corporate oligarchies who then have free reign to control every aspect of our society with govt funding. It's too expensive for the little guy. Socialism is the reason the economy is horrible, and prices are rising. The tax burden has always been on the rich. That's how the economy works.

By: arbeitfrei. on 13 Nov 08, 01:40:57
Capitalism can be regulated and controlled by placing the burden of financing a society on those who can afford to support it. In North America, we suffer from the idea that supporting the rich (corporations) through tax relief provides jobs and security for those lower on the food chain. This thinking is flawed.
By: sysFail81. on 11 Nov 08, 22:35:33
when he says that about, it's difficult to solve issues if the cause of the issue is also your strength. That applies capitalism and economic growth by GDP! Will global society perceive it on time? I am becoming more and more pessimistic.
By: mrmultidextrous. on 11 Nov 08, 10:35:55
society or civilization ?
By: descendantofmankind. on 11 Nov 08, 04:18:10
Nice talk. He's absolutely right. Something has to be done right now about a whole bunch of things. It was rather inconclusive, though. I think the solution to most of those problems simultaniously is the end of capitalism. The elite just can't stop themselves. It's an addiction, and we will all be the victims if we don't stop them.

Who elected the king of Norway again? And if the king has no power- as subjects of the crown are so fond of repeating-, march into the unelected king's palace and tell he has no power. America isn't perfect, yet early European migrants left Europe by the shipload to leave Europe and her "great ideas".

Sure, some are trully unlucky. But I remember something about pale blue eyed indians, I believe from Canada, that where around perhaps even until XVIII century, but they have forgotten how to make iron axes, true. Culture is much more fragile thing to pass to future generations than genes.

"dont know why americans are so afraid of socialism. socialism provide protection to the people." Good question fuunguus. The answer lies in the inevitable evolution of socialism: Total state control similar to communism. Western civilization is on a parallel course with the roman empire, this is not new news. Eventually, 1 civil servant per 1 worker, inevitable collapse weakening society to outside attacks.
By: MisterGibs. on 10 Nov 08, 00:17:12
"but that does not mean they die off, well not ALL of them" Not nessecarily. The Greenland Norse that Diamond was talking about all died, down to the last man.

bah, hitted the post comment button there, trying to fix that error. - ...illegal wont help anyone, it just creates more problems. people understand the dangers of all drugs, but throwing them in prison certainly dont help.
By: fuunguus. on 10 Nov 08, 00:12:55
i dont know why americans are so afraid of socialism. socialism provide protection to the people. now, in usa, its more like "Everyone for him self. and if you dont make it we dont care." And the socalled freedom in usa seems to mostly favor the corporations, the corporations got too fucking much freedom. and if we talk about personal freedom, its just getting lesser. like people cant think for them self.. making drungs illigal

It's kinda like a double edged sword

"Free market is about individual economical freedom and so private property. It's not about huge corporations..." Capitalism has very little to do with the free market. The free market is when numerous individuals can engage in free commerce without restriction & no one individual could set prices. However under capitalism, capital is concentrated in the hands of a few who manipulate the markets for there own ends, i.e. when 1% of the nation controls 50% of the wealth as in the US.
