Thanks for posting this vid. I myself am a Tenor Sax jazz musician. To me Sonny Rollins never gets old. Ofcourse you might not have the same breathe as you did when you were 30, but Miles Davis also showed signs of not playing as strong. That happens with age. But to be honest, personaly I do not feel that Sonny has lost a step. To me he is still the reigning king of tenors. KEEP BLOWING SUNNY...BECUASE AS JAZZ CATS, THAT IS ALL WE HAVE.

I am sorry but in a way I have to agree with this fellow - I love Newk's old stuff, I mean the 50's, but when I look at him in this video, I just see a man who throws himself from side to side and his musical ideas are not a single bit "fresher" than the ones that he had in the past. And I think he definitely lost that fire he had. I know he is old, but I just don't like the way he keeps on going just because he is the famous Sonny Rollins. I like him in the past. I dislike him in the present.

If we're talking solely about technical ability, then I would agree with you that Brecker took insane harmonic ideas and branched them out to the limits on saxophone and on EWI, however Sonny is an original jazz giant that will never be overruled. And in my opinion, Chris Potter got his hands on that 'crown' before Brecker passed. If you haven't already, check out a bootleg copy of Potter playing All The Things You Are for a master class unaccompanied......you'll see what I mean ;)

AlainGerber is a French Critic who wrote a book about john coltrane "Le Cas Coltrane". Very intersesting and instructive.. Yes Sonny and Trane were great friends for a moment... But in the book there is a long chapter about Sonny/John relationship.. According to sonny when He played with his trio, he played in this kinda group because there was no pianist he would have liked to play with but Mc Coy Tyner... Coltrane had yet taken him... That's an example. Read the book if you wanna learn more.

Practically every tune on Youtube is out of original key. Could be the "flash" technology, but with a tuner, you can check for yourself. Either flat or sharp every time. I know Sonny Boy's music and he didn't play any flats except Bb occasionally but rarely. Mostly G and C Hohner 364s.

Many of Sonny boy's tunes were played on a Marine Band 364, a twelve hole diatonic with great resonant low end reeds. They come in G and C, sometimes D but never in a flat or sharp. He didn't play using tongue-blocking either. By the way, he looks authentic because HE IS ONE OF THE MASTERS, a delta player.

I saw this guy at the Barbican in London about 10 years ago. Waited an hour at the stage door to shake his BIG hands and get my Silver Album signed. He was old then! Can't believe he's still touring and throwing the long solos out. I saw Ray Charles at the same venue 2-3 weeks later - turns out that was the last chance I would've had to get him. These guys are the founding fathers and while you have the chance, you gotta catch 'em before they're gone.

Hahah Sonny's sound makes Sanborn's alto sound like a kazoo. Don't get me wrong, I love Sanborn's alto sound and I think it's huge when he plays by himself. But when you put him next to one of the guys with the biggest tenor sounds around ... it just doesn't cut it haha. Great music tho.

No they aren't squeaks. Since the song Song is in C (I feel like transcribing this masterpiece) He was playing a C5 concert, which surprisingly, he knew he was gonna hit it! Damn! The highest I can play on Alto is an F#4, which is the lydian 5th of the octave below it! He also starts hitting the F5 AND G5 AT THE END. As expected from Sonny to be so amazing, but I never knew he could do THAT. Not even on his milestone piano-less Night in Tunisia recording!

I was at this gig and it feels like it was just a few weeks ago - not 26 years!!! The greatest performance I ever heard Sonny play was at the astrolabe in Ottawa when his opening calypso lasted about fifteeen minutes - the only music I have ever heard that got me airborne and made me feel like I was flying - just the most incredible aesthetic rush - and I wasn't on anything - so thank you for the music, Sonny, and the memories!

Sonny Rollins is the greatest ever on Tenor. You see so many sax players switch up and play all the saxes. But Sonny's focus on the tenor sax has made him an unmistakable GIANT among sax players. That is what I love about Sonny...you always know the sound that you are going to get. Also his improv is out of this world. As a tenor player myself, I choose to follow after sonny and only play the tenor. I have played all the saxes, but now feel at home on the tenor. Love ya Sonny!!!!

It's really like comparing Trane to Rollins....you can compare but saying one is better than the other is insane. Rollins was more feeling and playing while improvising over the melody and Trane was more theory oriented and they are/were beautiful people

I saw this very group in 1983 at Jacob's Pillow in Massachusetts. The Don't Stop the Carnival was the biggest blowout of my entire life. Unfortunately so far I can't find it done like that by Sonny on youtube. If I could I'd be very happy because I could get those moments back. It made a big difference when he used great musicians like DeJohnette and Cranshaw.

Sonny is a master because of his incredible chops: articulation, tone, voicing and a vast vocabulary that allow him to not just play the kind of creative lines he does but to weave in a quote in one arpeggio without really playing the melody. That´s what Jamey Aebersold means when he says to play changes on a head and suggest the melody without actually playing it.

The basic difference between Bird and Sonny was that Sonny was classically trained, whereas Bird picked it up as he went. Beyond that, who cares? They were both magnificent. Can you play better Alto? What a great piece! I think that Sonny Stitt's ability to improvise on the alto at least equals Parker's. I love both of them, or at least their music. Thanks for posting this!

There are lots of stories that Sonny Stitt was playing "Birdlike" even before Bird, so it is quite interesting to see him playing in a "Bird Set". Stitt remains an under appreciated wonderful player who contributed many high points to the jazz lexicon. Bird lives, and so does Sonny Stitt
