I've had a series of "house spiders" wander in my room and sit on the chair and simply watch me on teh pc. Please someone confirm they are not poisonous? They are fairly big, about twice the size of a £2 coin. They are all brown and have smallish bodies with very long thick brown legs. What type of spider am I dealing with here?

Technically Tarantulas aren't deadly to humans, but it depends on the person bitten. A large proportion of deaths from venomous bites aren't caused by the envenomation itself, but from anaphylaxic shock. Someone who is allergic to neurotoxin would be just as likely to die from a wasp sting than a funnel-web bite. But on the whole, Tarantulas aren't dangerous. Their venom isn't as potent as smaller Mygalomorphae, as they also use their size and strength to kill prey.

I don't know what kind of spiders I saw when I lived in central Turkey, but they were the most ferocious I'd ever seen. Smooth, greenish-brown with red face and fangs. We'd lure them out of their holes with a LONG weed, and trap them outside. They'd rise up on their back legs with fangs bared, and sometimes they'd even run at us. Actually saw one attack the tire of a car which had driven up and stopped at a stop sign. Have no idea what they were, but I know they weren't camel spiders.

Funny how you tell me that my talk fuels fear of spiders, yet you were unable to refute my statements. Everything I said was perfectly valid. I know perfectly well that black widow bites are very rarely deadly. However, if you get a black widow bite, there's also a VERY low chance that you won't be in an emergency room. Pain. Extreme amounts of it. Few people wouldn't go to a doctor in that circumstance. There's absolutely no good reason to let them live in your home. It's pointless.

It's talk like that that fuels the fear of spiders. Just so you know the black widow is almost NEVER deadly, only to elderly, young and people with heart conditions. Also they are actually very shy spiders that only become agressive when guarding eggs or if provoked. I have 3 in a vivarium in my house and my sister handles them all the time.

I've been bitten so many times by spiders, I know not to mess with them. They're dangerous--from a measly sting to your arm requiring amputation. In comparison, bugs are considerably less harmful. I can understand you ignoring the lesser spiders, but black widows? When you have a nest of those things in your home, it's only a matter of time before you'll be in the emergency room.
