I can't say how much I respect and admire Joss after hearing this speech. What he said is all I think and feel. Fighting for equality should not be seen as some kind of war between women and men. Equality is something we all need. We just should all respect other people and treat them as fellow human beings no matter what gender they are.

As Joss says, the very fact that he is being asked about writing strong females shows that men and women do not yet have equality. The casual attitude towards feminism an women's rights is another threat to women. A person's gender does not determine whether or not they are a feminist. Phoenixatom does have a valid point. Has anyone here watched a lot of anime? If you have, you'll notice that very rarely will a 'strong woman' ever win and complete a fight. If they do, then the adversary was never truly defeated. On the rare occasion that a woman does defeat someone, then she's scantily clad and sexualized. Pheonix's comment may or may not apply to buffy--but it applies to a LOT of of what we take in from the media.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is a fine actress and person and deserves nothing but our accolades and affirmation here. Team Joss all the way, but Team Gellar too. She carried the show; lots of 20hr days and 7day weeks during which she delivered nothing but the best. Let's not forget what she gave of herself in the creation and establishment of Buffy the character, the series, and their combined legacies. SMG was ALWAYS classy in talking about the show in the press; let's give her the same.

Don't diss Gellar man. She put that show Buffy on her back and made it everything that it was. Do you realize the sheer physical demands of being the sole lead in a 1 hr show? And with fight scenes that must be painstakingly shot and choreographed over several days? SMG was Joss' biggest advocate and supporter & before I even saw Buffy I recalled her countless delightful talk show guest appearances to rave about Joss, the show and how lucky she was. I think they're both genius.

To be honest I'm actually a big Angel fan, but even with that referenced I share your take on the puzzling nature of Whedon's heralded reputation. Aside from the prodigious deal of pop culture references - which really aren't that great anyway - there really isn't much too uniquely notable about him. I feel the same way about Brian Bendis greatly myself... Arguably the biggest comic writer around today possibly rivaled by Brubaker... How that's the case... Another good question.

But it is mainstream, but in a really nice way, its just a great show that deserves it, so I don't know what I meant by that last sentence in the prior comment. I love this show so much - just because it isn`t such a mega blockbusting, mass compatible production!! It`s a small one with grumpy, simply likeable characters, an exotic, sometimes strange but all the way exciting story - which WASN`T told a thousand times before in other shows and movies!! The mixture btw. classical Western elements and a SciFi background is absolutely unique (so far) in movie history, and makes Whedon the creator of something completely new in storywriting!!

Well, here we go...Cain Killed Abel out of jealousy. That his offering did not find favor in the eyes of god, even though he gave what he grew from the land, and his brother gave a burnt offering of the Lamb/Goat, whatever. I always felt that playing favorites was one sin that God created. Hmmm, is playing favorites a sin? Then in Exodus we have Moses receiving the 10 Commandments and Rule 6 is Thou Shalt not Kill. And what happens?
