I love the way sonny boy played the licks he gives with the harp are usually pretty simple but every note just seems so perfectly in place it's hard to believe.

That's what makes me love this version. Waters rides the instruments and plays with time. Other times, in more popular recordings he is driving the song. Same thing with Williamson- he is punctuating rather than playing long notes. You can see how bebop rise from some of the same choices choices that blues singers were making already.

Seconded. To anyone new to the blues who watches this video, while it is true that Sonny Boy does derail this recording somewhat, please don't let this put you off Sonny Boy at all. He easily vies with Little Walter for the prize of "Greatest Blues Harpist Ever" and his work is definitely worth getting to know. Peace guys.

As noted this is not Muddy's key and Sonny Boy is just noodling aimlessly.Muddy is not happy.I am a big fan of Sonny Boy,I know virtually all his recorded work.This clip is not reprsentative of him and is not pleasant viewing or listening.Even the greats had bad days or were just too plain drunk too do a proper job (as per here).

Hey guys - if you go to the SBW vid 'I'm a Lonely Man' you'll hear him switch mid way from a regular 10hole Mband in 'C' to the 14hole 'C' . . . or is it a 12? shit, who cares?! Sonny Boy is untouchable, and the best we can do is admire and emulate. We are a world away from the likes of Sonny Boy, The Wolf, Muddy and the rest. Peace, brothers.

hi guys - gotta go with resolucion. I believe its a 14hole MarineBand in D. Got those real low notes. Tough to play like a maestro, but for soul and rhythm very cool. I think hohner only produced them in 'C' or 'D'. Sonny Boy with ByeBye Bird is the best you'll hear. For something more recent Tim Elliot of Blues N Trouble (UK) does some fine 'tribute' songs in this style . .

in addition to hands closed and opened- I've noticed from playing- you can get a pretty good vibrato from actually vibrating the harp, moving just the fingers helps with that, but also with expression. It really is about playing style, and he is one of the absolute bests that ever was.

Wow hon;I havn't been around for a while,but still can't believe I missed this! I had a radio show in the 70's and found an album by her before Olivia records existed. It had one song,"Johanna "that I used to play on my show. Then Olivia happened,and I was so thrilled not to have to search through the radio stations music library every week to find women oriented music.The changer and the changed in particular was such a trailblaiser! i agree backwoodpictures, the tom pryce accident has to be the cruelest of all F1 crashes, not only did the marshall die aswell but the absolute randomness of it... and the fire extiguisher hitting his helmet and getting the chin strap to nearly decapitate pryce, it was worse luck than the suspension arm piercing senna's helmet... Tom pryce was one of the most natuarally gifted F1 drivers ever and the fact that he was killed by such a pointless accident is absolutely horrible...

it was that crash that sparked the whole safety thing in f1. the marshals stood by not willing to do anything, david purley tried to use an extinguisher and it didnt work! he stood there trying to free roger whilst all the time he could hear roger screaming "get me out" the officials brought the wrecked car back to the garage in the pits and asked frank willimas to remove the body as quickly as he could as it was unpleasant!! rogers hands were covering his eyes, shielding him from the flames...

You're so right about Hohners with wooden key decks. Over time they will warp with saliva and the stress of draw and push. I prefer Lee Oscar because the key deck is polymer and the coverplates are higher forcing my chordal progressions to be more open as I move left and right. My white boy mouth tends to close as I change positions. The higher cover plates tend to keep my chords more open as I change.

The world lost a very genuine man when Irwin died. His FedEx commercial was funny. I saw a stingray up close in the Tampa aquarium. It's tail is very sturdy and sharp like a sword and I can see how this caused his death. We know more about animals because of him but this was a reminder the danger is always there.
