If you could watch basketball in a photo realistic way but from any angle with a crowd of people present would that not be better than just a tv feed? i've been a long-time sampras fan first of all....but I was never happier to see a man Get his OWN , his VERY OWN major title -- his beloved wimbledon...when Goran Ivanisevic won it at last. I was Sooooooooooooo happy and in tears just following him throughout the tournament matches, growing in confidence, and finally , under dramatic moments, TAKE wimbledon as his VERY OWN....what a player!!! and THAT"S how grass court tennis, from him and Patrick , ought to be played. !

Listen dude, your knowledge of tennis is pathetic, have you seen Borg play recently with new tech raquets, he's just a beast at 52 If Sampras, Fed and Borg were put in their primes in one moment in time with same equipment, technology,etc there's no doubt in my mind that Those matches among them would be five set matches, 7-6 in the fifth set for the winner. You can't compare eras but the talent is past eras and Borg was gifted. If Borg had been born in 1981, he would be a legend by now as well.

I am so tired of hearing people say that players like borg and others from earlier generations would not be top players today. You cannot compare generations of players. Borg used a wood racquet likely strung with gut. the courts played differently back then, the conditioning of players was different, etc. lets stop downplaying past players by saying that they would get their butts kicked by today's players...its just not respectful.

I liked 1979 because of the surprise effect of Roscoe Tanner. You didn't know what was going to happen with him. While McEnroe and Borg, you know both players were going to be consistent. The Roscoe Tanner match had the Kelly Clarkson effect of the song "Breakaway."

Nope. You're wrong. You should learn something about the subject before making such proclamations. Tanner served 135mph in his forties on the seniors tour while the fastest serve on the atp that year was 134mph. He was also recorded repeatedly on radar and by computer analysis over 130mph in his prime.

Tanner didn't play with a wood racket-it was what was commonly known as a "red" Head.an aluminum racket,it had considerable power,but was difficult to control(compared to today).there wasn't any reliable way to measure a serve at the time,but i'd guess on a good day he was probably in the 120's.

Looks like a severe case of "selective blindness" about Rafa's wins on fast surfaces including Toronto, Queen's and the Beijing Gold medal this year... But you're not the only one. Some people really like diminishing his accomplishments and his #1 status. They slowed Wimbledon but hardened Roland Garros -does it balance things? Fast or slow, there are not many players with three Wimblendon finals in a row at just 22.

you know why nadal and federer did not meet often? because federer went to finals in almost every match, whehther it is clay or hard. But nadal is hardly seen in final on hard court. that's why. Federer went to final on clay, but nadal did not. If you take clay record off, federer is actually winning over nadal. For instance the passing shot at 2:44 would never have been a passing shot against somebody of the 90s era. 90s=more power and more precision than the eighties, in other words, you had to have more than a big serve and decent volleys to win Wimbledon, and Sampras in his prime was WAY better than Becker.

Give me a break. Who did Becker play in the final? Not an actual serve and volleyer, but a baseliner who had the huge disadvantage at Wimbledon. At age 19, Sampras beat Lendl, Mcenroe, and then Agassi to win the US Open. At 17, he could easily have beaten a 17 year old Becker to win Wimbledon.

No, Rolland Garros didn't change its surface at all. The reason for the change in his results was that from about 1990-96 he was an all court player, like Federer, who could do pretty much everything, but was slightly more competent at net (like how Fed is slightly more competent at the baseline). However, from about 97-2002, Pete became more of a Serve and Volleyer and both first and second serves on all surfaces, and on clay, serve and volleyers have never really done well.

Interesting to look at Wimbledon's great champions. First it was Laver, then Borg came along who was better, then Mcenroe dethroned Borg and became champ for a short period, then Becker came along and became the dominant player, then Pete Sampras came along and became Wimbledon's most dominant grass courter in over a hundred years with 7 titles. Then Fed dethroned Pete and became Wimbledon's current king. Pete IMO is the best Wimbledon champ with Fed trailing close behind.

That's the problem: Hana couldn't be "in the zone" in all the Slams she entered. Talk about a streaky player! Loved her fluid, graceful athleticism: didn't like her lack of a strong B-game. Evert was always solid though and found a way to win big matches when she was playing her A-game. But on that day in the semifinals, on grass, the talented serve-volley-streaky player (Hana) beat my favorite female player of all time (Chris Evert).

Yeah, Hana did and said some things that she later regretted. But had Hana been a man I doubt that many people would've thought twice about much of those type things. Women are competitive too. And neither Martina nor Chris were entirely without fault. Martina by her own admission could be as obnoxious as anyone. She also freely admits that she was intimidated by the way Hana played. And Chris was a master manipulator who was personal friends with much of the tennis media and tour offic.

Hana tended to talk the talk, but not walk the walk, especially against Chris and Martina N. In the 1984 French Open women's doubles final, with Hana and Claudia Kohde-Kilsch facing Martina N. and Pam Shriver, Hana kept imitating a gorilla's movements while looking in Martina's direction. Martina didn't speak to Hana for a year after that, but eventually forgave her. And Hana apologised.

I loved watching Hana play. It wasn't so much about power as it is about grace, crisp ground strokes and accuracy. She's gotten criticism for being erratic at times, but I do remember trying to copy her movements and strokes, particularly her forehand.

I agree totally, she was fun to watch and I usually rooted for her as a kid since I perceived her as the underdog as opposed to mighty Navratílova and Evert. Re:mental fragility, have you noticed it seems to be prevalent among Czech (or former Czechoslovak) players with the exception of Martina and Lendl: Novotná, Vaidisová, Mecir, Hantuchová, Berdych, Suková...Wonder why.

Hana was my favorite player of that era. Such a graceful mover, and beautiful shots, a pure talent. She was always a little too fragile mentally though, and had the misfortune of playing in the era of Navratilova and Evert. But to still be able to win 4 grand slam titles during that time is an amazing feat.

Except for the 1985 US Open in which she beat both Evert and Navratilová on her way to the title. I was a kid and when I watched the news on TV I remember asking my dad if that meant Navratilová was no longer the number 1. He went on to explain the ranking system to me :-)

Loved watching Hana, but she sort of deserved being ridiculed. She wasn't friendly, and she often criticized both Evert and Martina. She once made fun of Martina in a doubles match right in front of Martina. In hindsight, all these players were young, and they probably think back with amusement.

No way was Federer-Nadal 2008 final the best match ever. Not even close to this one. The first 2 sets of this years final were horrible. Federer played very poorly. It seems like people tend to only remember the great shots of this years match and not the match as a whole. During the first 2 sets I felt like turing off the tv the tennis was so bad. The 2001 Final and the tournament in general were epic from the start. This was when grass actually played like grass!

After watching Goran lose year after year... semis after finals... he finally won it.. and how?? as a wild card entrant... had tears in my eyes I couldnt stop em... Just for quality - Rafa Fedex match was the best of all time. For drama, emotion, atmosphere and what it meant for Goran, the best match of all time... His greatest day in his life.. and Mine too...
