I'm afraid that I have to agree with Janet Lynn who stated that although Katarina received ballet training in her upper body, her lower body had not. When I see Katarina skate it looks as though the two halves come from different bodies making her basic skating motion look awkward. I do agree that Katarina makes a powerful presence on the ice, but I do not equate personality with artistry. Although I agree that perfect line and toe point are not all there is to artistry, it sure helps!

She made a few mistakes, such as at 3:00, but it was a stunning performance regardless. I loved her attitude at 1:50. She also reminds me of my coach for some reason. XD And Carmen was a very good song choice. The dress fits the Spanish roots of the song, too. :) LOVE THE ENDING

You are wrong here too. I like Manley alot but her short program was overscored as well. With her own easier combination of only a triple salchow, and her obvious bobble on a camel spin she deserved no higher then 5th place in the short. Her figures were also questionable and I doubt they were any better then Witt's. She won the long program over Witt as she deserved to but not the title with a mediocre short and less then great figures herself.

Witt was a great skater.I appreciate her glamourous style & the fact that she was the STRONGEST competitor. but with skating skills, I don't think she was the best.Back then Figures were important & she was terrible!Judges helped her there too! Her jumps were clean but not textbook & she rarely attempted the more difficult jumps/combinations her rivals did. Dick Button once said that her line & positions weren't all that first rate. But you obviously think Witt the best-I understand.

Witt was the most consistent competitor of her era & deserved her titles. I agree she was artistically strong but many believe she received favortism from Eastern block judges who favored her style unfairly. Technique shouldn't be subjective & in Witt's case her deficits were simply ignored.Her Figures were terrible yet they were often bumped up to help her succeed.Her jumps & spins werent first rate & this too was often overlooked. The bad thing about this sport is its subjectivity

Yes, there is no comparison. Witt's Carmen was not a true skater's performance.She didnt challenge herself in any way, shape or form as a SKATER.She relied on poses & emoting-pretty, but not much substance. Debi didnt skate well in her Long but her Carmen showed passion & energy! AND she challenged herself technically.And artistically! Manley was glorious that night & way better than Witt.She showed the sheer joy of skating & delivered technically. Witt's didn't deserve to win IMO.

Cohen actually WENT for all the Triple jumps. When Witt got nervous or didn't feel comfortable on the takeoff to a jump, she'd often just do a double. Downgrading your content is a mistake too. Who knows how well Witt would have been able to skate in a more demanding era. The fact remains that she usually didn't skate perfect and also didn't have very demanding competition when she won her titles. Would have been interesting to see Denise Biellmann stick around until 1988.

Who cares. She still is in another league from Cohen the splatfest queen. If you want to talk about competition who was Kwan's great competition. Tara was good but she lasted a couple years only. Irina who had horrible artistry, and still beat Kwan whenever she skated clean but in big events always made mistakes. Maria who had weak technical ability and weak artistry and no consistency. Cohen who as I mentioned was the splat queen, had shallow edges, no speed, tiny jumps.

Witt didn't have much competition in her day (at least not any that the judges wanted to grade fairly). FYI, Witt tried to do harder jumps and wasn't consistent with them. In the early 80's she was trying the Triple Flip in her Long Programs, but couldn't do it cleanly, and then later on she scheduled a Triple Loop (which she only managed to do at 1987 Worlds, which is by far her best performance).

I love Witt's technique and artistry both way more then Sasha Cohen. Cohen only did harder jumps since everyone did harder jumps then. If she were around in 88 she wouldnt do any harder jumps then Witt, probably easier. Witt's high technically sound jumps are much better then Cohen's puny flutzing jumps. Cohen may have prettier toepoint and positions but Witt's overall artistry is much better. Anyway Witt is a legend, and Cohen is just a bridesmaid who never won anything that mattered.

This sport to me remains very odd, however; imagine having a running commentary provided to a music or theatrical performance, where the only thing considered is how many "moves" of various kinds are performed!? This strange and very superficial thinking must constitute a tremendous frustration for the real artists of skating. Witt speaks from her soul; that is what matters, here as in all art. i find sasha more inspiring as carmen. katarina's technical content is a joke. true, back then figure skating was not very competitive in terms of technique, but i love sasha's artistry more. witt has way too much breathing time in her program, and i dont personally see her steps and expressive portion that exciting...its so sluggish... i do give her due credit though, for having an amazing dominance on the sport.
