How do you know??? I wouldn't make comparitions, they're both great. For sure Van Zandt is more sophisticated as a guitarist. Dylan is a bit more polivalent stylisticly to me. But those are just opinions.

Fantastic vid. It's good to see Townes the way I remember him. My only advice about his music is this: don't listen to his music if you already have the blues. I did once a long long time ago and I wish I hadn't. I remember that day like it was yesterday.

Well put. Of course, it's silly to declare so unequivocally that one very gifted songwriter is better than another. Dylan's influence is, of course, greater, but there's a directness in Van Zandt's writing that so poignant.

Bob Dylan and Townes are very different. I don't think that one is better than the other. Dylan's influences come from Woody Guthry and the folk music tradition. Townes' influences come from Hank Williams and the Delta blues. Townes most effective songs come from the inside out to express hos own terrible inner feelings.

I love Bob Dylan and I won't pick one either. However, Townes "lived it". I know Dylan's history. He made his way to New York to see Woody Guthrie. I will never take anything away from him. Watch the dvd of Be Here To Love Me. If that doesn't affect you, then I'm sure that you wouldn't be able to understand what I'm attempting to talk about.

I had the great privelige to meet Townes in 1995 at rockerfellers in houston. I got permission to go backstage to have him autograph an album cover I had brought with me. It is my most prized possession. I shook his hand and we spoke for a minute about the first time I saw him perform at the old quarter in houston in the early 70s. I'll never forget that experience

Another continuation: reading the posts below I can't tell what it sounds like. But I know how deeply he feels things. He doesn't know how to say anything but appreciated it when someone else does. I wish someone had given him a guitar at a crucial moment. It might have kept him from having to dry out at the mens shelter every 3 months. --I sure dont mean to push this on ya'll. This is a continuation of my post below.---So I love these songs, they have really been helping me out. I love the honesty of the happy songs, the starkness of the sad songs, and the tragedy of Marie-if I could ever write a song as good as Townes.--My dad is now a couple of years older than Townes was when he died. I would like to share these songs with him...but he has had serious drug and alcohol problems that have cost us all dearly, him the most. I'm afraid to tap into the wrong feelings.

I am a Native Texan now living in Charlottesville, VA. The first live music I ever saw was Willie Nelson, and I've been faithful ever since, even through the years I had a touring punk rock band. I had heard of Townes, and it was always with a certain reverence, like 'if you think This is good, you need to hear Townes.' Well, this past May I went to visit a buddy in Portland, OR, and he turned me on to Be Here To Love Me. I made it a point to get some Townes.

I remember the day that Townes's road manager Harold Eggers gave the demo of "Marie". I took it home and played it, played it again, played it again and thought to myself this is the most depressing song that Townes had ever penned. My advice to anyone is that if already have the blues and you're feeling lowly - don't listen to TVZ music. You may not recover fully.

To Otispuss2 - I'm sure I saw Townes doin nothin on You Tube not so long ago. If it is no longer around i would suggest you order one of Townes DVD's from HMV or Amazon. It may take a while for delivery but is deffinatly worth it. Be Here to love me" is a great DVD and has plenty of Towns performances. In fact his own son does A real good version of Nothin.

As far as best songwriters go, you can add Steve Earle to that list. I guess you could consider him Townes's Protege although Steve was quite good before meeting Towns, But Steve will tell ya that Townes taught him everything he knows about a story song. Now normally I would say that Steve has surpassed him in that particular aspect of song wrighting. ( Townes is still the better poet) But even Steve has his work cut out for him against this monster song.

Townes was the greatest songwriter of his generation. The best way to honor him is to keep singing and playing his songs. I first saw him at the Saxon Pub on 38th and IH35 in about 1966.He sang Mr. Gold and Mr. Mud,one of the most amazing songs I have ever heard, before or since. He hated to see me show up, because I always wrote that on a napkin as a request, and he hated to have to try to remember it all. But he always did, and always perfectly, no matter how wasted he was. I feel so bad about the way Townes lost his long term memory w insulin shock therapy. It seems like he just stayed so sad after all of that. Kudos for putting this beautiful tribute together for all of us who miss Townes so much. And i couldn't think of a better singer than Lyle Lovett to cover one of his most affecting songs- it definitely brought a tear to my eye. but as i watched this i couldn't help but thinking of the irony now that the first album i ever bought of his work was entitled "The Late Great Townes Van Zandt". that's for sure! it's no wonder that with his songwriting genius, so many other performers are in awe...

I sure have to agree w/you re: usage of acoustic spaces! I use that a lot in my music (my son would say "mom why aren't you playing that?" I explained the idea of space to feel/think. I dig that the singer from my favorite rock band recorded a song by my favorite singer/songwriter, but I don't like that the sound of the distorted electric guitar blasted all over everything. It really ruins the powerful effects created by the holes which allow the listener to apply their imagination and feel a stronger connection to the music in my opinion. This is how it sounds good, with acoustic spaces. "Nothing is too much to bear."

Townes has always been a star(literally) but a shooting star (at one time maybe) He'd been making records since the late sixties. Magical masterpieces of magnificent musical poetry flowed from him like water and the world NEVER caught on! Like Vincent Van Gogh, Townes died a unknown, out of print pauper. (mostly because of his compulsion to give away everything he ever earned along with sabotaging his own career.) Townes always said that like Vincent, he would be appreciated after he was gone.

I think the first two minutes of this video are an insight that shouldn't have been left out of the recent documentary. Learned to play harmonica and guitar at the same time and sang Blowin' in the Wind at his first concert, the homecoming dance, and his dad said, "That's pretty good Townes, but you ought to write your own songs." 'cluck!' Every time Townes clucks his tongue, there is a lightbulb going on, maybe lightning strikes the earth. These are the lessons to remember and pass on.

Sorry everyone but Im just barely discovering Towns Van Zandt tonight. Ive wathced probably 10 vid or so already and Im amazed and in tears. How did I never notice him?
