With no dialogue or narration, the first 3 minutes are pure cinematic poetry. The plot is insignificant to these flashbacks, fantasies, and memories. An absolute master of camera work, Fellini never left the extras to the assistant director. Often times, they are the real stars of his films.

I was 11 as I´ve found a small book in my grandfathers libary. On the front page was a detail of the well known initiation ceremony fresco of a pompeijan villa. It was an edition of the fragments of Petronius' Satyricon. One year later I saw this marvellous film and although the german synchronisation was unbearable, this film ends up in my olymp of unforgettable treasures.

everything about this film, and this sequence specifically, is masterful and bold. Amazingly unusual sound design. Fantastically fluent, painterly camerawork, art direction and costume design. Lyrical, poetic blocking and editing. And it all comes together as if it were happening live. Such an amazing, under-rated film!

However this is not only Fellini imaginery.This film is more "realistic" than the clean and shiny,old and new "peplum", as the gladiator (I like anyway this film).It's like John Ford and Sergio Leone westerns.I liked this film and THX however for the video.

I saw this movie when I was like 12. I am 31 now and I was always amazed at how nudity did not appeal to me as a 12 year old boy when I saw this movie. I searched for nudity as a 12 year old boy and Satyricon just removed all sexual aspect. I never liked this movie but it really made me understand art. And although I dont like it, it sure left an impression on my brain. As did the fashion show scene from Roma.

Satyricon was the apex of Surrealism and my favourite film for about 30 years but faded when I realised that the 'point' of it acted against it being a great film. Alienated Man cannot have emotional depth otherwise a lunatic asylum would be a quintessentially 'human' place. In spite of Fellini being incapable of making a boring scene the film loses out on this lack of finer feelings.

I enjoy this scene also. The singing "castrati" and the "morality play" bring to life another age. It is taken out of context however, and there is a more sinister, malicious aspect that annoys Casinova. (This is, however, his host...so he can't be honest and voice his annoyance.) He is repulsed by the aspect of sexual preference proferred as art. He does a great job trying to hide this but his discomfort is aparent.

Wonderful music, stage scenery, choreography. The lyrics (not translated to English) explain the characters on the stage and the morality of their performance: men shown as self-infatuated losers stand no chance when facing female cunningness and wantonness. The audience is the "Old Europe" (whispering in French, Spanish and Italian), pointing again to the weariness of our civilization with the "game of genders", hence with our drive to reproduce and regenerate.
