i agree with you, very much. the allmans have become a kind pedestal for trucks and haynes to shine from. Both guitarists outrank the other musicians in the band (except the bassist who is nasty too), and it's not just technical ability. they both have otherworldly phrasing, with trucks unleashing crazy melodies, and haynes holding up his end with more old school blues and southern rock.

its not necessarily harmonic minor which BTW only has 1 "outside the box" note which isnt really outside the box, its just the leading tone which is very common. it sounds like hes using mostly the Dorian blues scale which is the natural minor scale with a natural 6th and it adds the flat 5th. and its mostly how hes phrasing it, derek is amazing.

Here is my 2 cents. What he was doin' was playing outside by using the wholetone scale. As an improviser we use such tools to create tension. Its nice to go outside and play. You cant stay inside all the time because it gets boring. Now whether you like it or not is up to you because everybody hears music differently.

Butch wasn't mad at all! thats his normal look. Just watch any other ABB video, and you'll see the same face. As for Derek missing the key? Well listen to 1:30 when Derek is into My Favorite things, the drums get out of synch! There is no fuck ups when you are improvising your solo night in and night out. thats what makes this band one of the greatest ever in Rock and Roll. Its the jazz infusion and improv. but Derek uses a 65' super reverb which is a really clean amp, he gets his "overdriven" sound from his speakers which are pyle drivers, they are made for car stereos so they break up very easy at low volumes and when you crank the amp it sounds like you're using a tube overdrive pedal

i play a 50th anniversary 54 reissue strat, AND a 61 reissue SG, there is no way you can get that kind of sustain from a Fender or anything with a bolt on neck for that matter, Gibsons have so much sustain due to the set neck and angled headstock where Fender uses bolt ons with a straight headstock, most of the string energy is absorbed by the bolts where a Gibson resonates like the body and neck are a solid piece of wood, but its true about the amps, ones with thick gain will sustain better

Dreams is my favorite Allman's tune. To understand about Duane and why people are so passionate about his playing, a good thing would be to directly compare Derek's playing here with Duane's playing on the original recording on the Allman's first album. If you listen carefully, you can hear why Derek deserves his high reputation, but you will also hear why Duane's playing is considered untouchable by many. There is just something about Duane's glides... they're really "out there".

I think your opinion is right. I have said before that with a slide this young man cannot be touched. He is ranked (I believe by Guitar player magazine) as #81 in the entire world which I believe is short changing him. He has an understanding of the instrument that is posessed by few. His attitude is that of a humble young man and he has great respect for those who came before him. One day his name will be mentioned among the greats but he still has so far to go.

As for the Mayer comments. John Mayer is a talented guy, technically a very, very good guitarists--maybe even great. But NOT original. He plays like Stevie Rayvon. I think it is .. I have one of the new ones and I like it alot although I would rather it have Dot neck like a 60s... I think That guitar was Allens as I have seen him play it before he died.. Allen played with us one night at the Beach club in Sarasota on guitar and he was stunningly good.. Sure miss him

I from Argentina and the first time I listened the Mule was in 1998 in Tulsa Ok. i was studying there,I listened "Grinnin' in Your Face" and they just blew my head away!!!! This is a great clip. Sonny Landreth is killer, ,ut no matter how good any guest is, Warren is ahead of them by a mile. In my oppinion, hes one of the best guitarists of his generation. As for our generation? Its three amazing musicians: John Mayer, John Frusciante, and Derek Trucks.

i just saw these guys in concert for the second time two days ago. I am only 15 so i was never alive to here what duane can do, although i know it's unbelievable. But Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes are AMAZING! no picks! i couldn't belive my eyes, every note they hit is perfect. definately a concert worth going to if they come by you.

Have you heard the Fillmore West version from 1/71? It's in the Wolfgang's Vault site. Not a great quality recording, but Duane takes the solo to unreal heights. The Evening with the ABB version is fantastic, I agree.
