i start to believe, though i am 27 and i never lived the 70's era, that van der graaf generator along with king crimson were the 2 bands that made so many innovative things in rock music that NOONE did after them(maybe, maybe the pink floyd....:))).....Just bow...

love the sparklers great song - I'm 45 now and I remember discovering this vinyl when I was 17. ahhh

Aha...?
By: harrifripp. on 16 Nov 08, 06:20:59
Plague is as good a Piece of concept rock as ever recorded.Certainly better than anything by the usual hacks, like ELP and or yes.Basically speaker vomit.VDG was 1st before even Crimson, and this track is beautiful.Hamill is as influential a singer as there ever was I'm being redundant, but these guys were so important to me in my teens because they were all mine and I was fine with that.Pawn Hearts and Godbluff.Masterpieces!
By: harrifripp. on 16 Nov 08, 06:11:49
I remember doing things at parties in my teens like taking crap like CSNY off of turntables and putting The Generator on to see if anyone would notice. They were mine allmine, and yes it was Bowie doing Hamill, and i don't think Pete gave a shit because he knew the truth.Pawn Hearts and Godbluff are masterpieces, and I am glad to see The Generator is alive and well.

well, that's just an interpretation btw...great song, I'am 22 and a just discovered this great band and I already love it xD Peace

The lines I like a lot are "The maelstrom of my memory is a vampire and it feeds on me now"..What memories contributes to insanity and how they can corrode the minds of lonely people. "locked in silent monologue" is another great line. The second part of the song is more tricky and can be seen as a flashback of images and memories which led him into his actual state (locking back on the years, seems I have lost my way...) and the reasons of why he chose a solitary life...
By: ppihan. on 09 Nov 08, 22:53:37
Another interpretation here: The song is about the "plague" of the lighthouse keeper, where "Plague" is the solitude he experiences in his job as a lighthouse keeper ("my tower is built on stone"). He starts to loose his mind in this solitude and starts to freak as the song says, and finally he comitted suicide jumping into the sea.

f you mean v.g.generator and the whole prog scene,i can tell you that in the early '70 italians were the first enthusiastic fans of the prog movement ,pawn hearts sold(il disco) 800.000 copie in italy in 1971...Regarding my music preferences, I've stopped to listen music after Dolphin contralne sheep braxton coleman etc. etc. because i suppose i cant' have nothing better (or worst...maybe) i apologise for my english
By: HulaBulaSoundsystem. on 30 Oct 08, 18:07:21
I know. But if you are going to keep the keyword "easy" as a standard in your life, I am intrigued as to your choice of music?
By: akikkooo. on 22 Oct 08, 15:29:00
that's no easy for italians to learn such poor and primitive language ;)

The sax helps a lot too.

I'm really into the guitar. I like guys like David Gilmour, Steve Hackett, Steve Howe, and Robert Fripp. I noticed VDGG doesn't use too much guitar, and yet they still sound so complete.THAT'S TALENT!
By: Ireale87. on 21 Aug 08, 15:36:57
Grandi Vdg non li considero minori rispetto ad altri gruppi gia per il fatto di aver introdotto nel progressive l'uso dei fiati
By: MikeAdupont. on 12 Aug 08, 04:03:28
hmmmm a direct quote, while I can't argue with the band mates themselves, but A: it seems completely unrealistic that they would never play this song at concerts around the time being that it makes up half of pawn hears and B: I thought i saw something in a vdgg site once that showed all the dates of the concerts and the songs etc. plus i've read critics reviews in the newspapers of the time reading about it and they said vdgg played it.
By: nomorehierros. on 08 Jul 08, 19:22:22
I had not listened to VDGG for years, how great to rediscover them again. What an incredibly full and rich sound. Peter Hamill and Genesis were parallel to VDG, incidentally I saw Genesis supporting Lindisfarne at Preston Public Hall in the 70s!
By: Oscardasplupp. on 21 Jun 08, 12:23:15
I think that among progressive music this gotta be my favourite song, even though VDGG isn't my favourite band! This song is so unbelieavably great!
By: burgersoft777. on 20 Jun 08, 17:59:31
Talk about revisionism..I saw VDGG a number of times around the pawnhearts period and they never played it once. but I quote from the remastered pawn hearts booklet page 12 Jaxon says" we only played it (a plague)live once, and that was for Belgian tv. This is the proformance that you are calling the godbluff dvd but is in fact two separate films. This is why you will never find it on a bootleg. Unless of course its the Belgian TV film.
By: MikeAdupont. on 20 Jun 08, 16:22:25
lol no...around the time pawn hearts was released they played this song at alot of concerts, atleast 30 or more, and they played it on the godbluff dvd. but yes its a good song ;)
By: burgersoft777. on 31 Mar 08, 14:00:53
Only a very small fragment. They never preformed the whole piece live other than this one off for film. As it was Hammill can be seen using a copy of the lyric sheet from the record. lemmings and Man-erg were often part of the set but never a Plague.

Isn't it on Vital live album?
