I'm actually playing this song to my sister's wedding this weekend! I play alto sax, brother on piano, and friend on bass. It will be pure improv. Miles Davis is definitely a genius.

This is not *smooth jazz*; and I think it is one of the greatest jazz records ever, and my own favourite. If anyone thinks Coltrane and Adderly laying out on these tracks, not to mention Miles, has anything to do with insipid music--smooth jazz, that is to say--then I think he or she does not know what he or she is talking about. Exactly. Anybody can like this stuff. Personally, I'm a Dream Theater fan, but Miles Davis branches across to so many people from so many walks of life that I have no trouble going to this, straight from Prog Metal. Also, to prevent a flame war here, I'm not saying that this stuff is like prog metal at all. They're completely separate, but "It's all music". Good music is good music.
