all he's saying is that women, as a gender, have never needed to be funny, because in the traditional sense of mating, the male has to court the female. since humor can be a mechanism of courting, it is necessary for men to evolve humor as a major part of interaction. thats not to say woman aren't, or can't be, funny. for men its more of a necessity, in a biological sense.
By: iArsalan. on 05 Dec 08, 08:52:14
I noticed that too but I think he was doing that to get a rise outta them. But his main point is very true, this new generation of female comedians just aren't funny. And they are a far cry from the previous generation who broke barriers in comedy which has always been a boys club.
By: iArsalan. on 05 Dec 08, 08:44:47
But really I can't stress it enough. Sarah fucking Silverman and Tina Fey?! Candace Burgen is ten times the talent they are and she's not even a comedian. Pardon me Christopher Hitchens but that's like beating up on the disabled kids. The problem is these talentless women get by on their looks and women with real talent are largely ignored. I mean WHOOPY GOLDBERG! One of the smartest comedians ever to grace the stage. But she's not 'hot' so no one mentions her.
By: Mwahohoho. on 05 Dec 08, 08:43:52
btw, I didn't realize that--although I do notice now the female comedians he's mentioning on this subject are um, what he calls..."d*kes, Jews or butch". Kinda harsh how he said it.
By: Mwahohoho. on 05 Dec 08, 08:22:12
Historically for women, women always had a more difficult time being taken more seriously--they're seen as soft. When guys joke about females I think it's really mean. But I'm sure they feel the same when females joke too. Any, back on topic heheh

Good point
By: iArsalan. on 05 Dec 08, 06:52:29
But also I think it's cultural. I come from an African background and all the women I grew up with in the family were hilarious. And any woman you propose to bring into the family has to be able to hold her own at party. But I think his focus was more for the White America experience, our culture is largely ignored when people speak of 'Americans' in general.

As a man, I am attracted to women with a more than passive sense of humor. The rest of it is verbose, but lacking any factual basis - it makes logical sense, but he has yet to offer proof - only assertions delivered with an air of insufferable arrogance. On other matters, he often brings up good points, albeit in the most circumlocutious route possible. It's clear by his language though that in this case he's speaking only from his personal prejudices.

GIVE THIS MAN A BEER!!!
By: Mwahohoho. on 04 Dec 08, 07:07:00
I'm female btw. I don't think it's as complicated as they make it, just some people simply don't think the humor matches the way others look and sound.
By: Mwahohoho. on 04 Dec 08, 07:02:22
like how females seem to get off more on teasing guys than the other way around.
By: Mwahohoho. on 04 Dec 08, 06:58:25
Women get off with their sex appeal more often and so cracking a joke might come off as them trying. Women actually are funny. But there are some jokes that work with one person better than another---sometimes because of historical stuff. Like certain people who can't make certain racist jokes without you wincing that they might get killed in any second
By: Mwahohoho. on 04 Dec 08, 06:52:51
Hmm, good thought there
By: iArsalan. on 04 Dec 08, 03:04:47
Tina Fey and Sarah Silverman? None of the women in piece are remotely funny. Tina Fey can wright but her comedic acting has always been bland and campy. Sarah Silverman is just agonizing to watch. He's right about these women, they're only considered because people find them "sexy". But I think women are very funny. Roseanne Bar, Marsha Warfield, Kelly Collfield Park, Sandra Burnhardt, Kim Wayans, and Paula Poundstone are all hillarious; they're just not considered "hot".
By: NoxArcanaNamaste. on 03 Dec 08, 21:22:10
I agree with everything he says except that "Most men are fantastically unattractive." I think just the opposite. Maybe because I'm not looking for the same physical qualities on a man as men look for in women. For me it's all about the light in the eyes and the smile.
By: mrfilanges. on 03 Dec 08, 18:49:36
It's not his views that wind me up, it's the air of smugness that accompany them.
By: heywoodjablohme. on 03 Dec 08, 08:30:18
Hitchens is great, except where he hasn't figured out politics. Calls himself a libertarian, but supported Gore. Duhhr. Still, funny and right on...

By: yury2268. on 02 Dec 08, 01:50:48
this is the first time i actually see eye to eye with the guy, women are attracted to men that they can have a fun time with, men have a fun time with simply being with attractive women regardless of their humor, putting more pressure on the man to make the woman laugh
By: emphaticapathy. on 01 Dec 08, 23:45:27
Anyone who knows the slightest thing about evolutionary psychology will get what he is trying to say...if not, you're a moaning ninny wo simply must pick up a book.
By: mikedubya. on 01 Dec 08, 08:21:29
Wanda Sykes's coming-out only adds to Hitchens's argument. She's one of the funniest comedians out there, and when I thought she was hetero I considered her an aberration. Now, it makes perfect sense.
By: darksyde3000. on 30 Nov 08, 22:20:08
And she's also a lesbian which is exactly is point. He has made an observation about the kind of women comedians there are and why he thinks that is; I don't think his opinions are unfounded, though obviously a little offensive.
