I didn't know that Jonas had got into the team that way, 5vid. To me, Jonas didn't look like he could box, couldn't slip a punch, and he looked overawed before the bout. That explains it. He had a lot of courage, though, and it must have been an exciting time for him.

aahahahahaha its so true

The official stats show that George was 6'3.5" and 219 lbs. for this fight. Foreman was a beast even as a kid. And he was a kid here. Only 19 years of age. I don't think I would have wanted to mess with him when he was five years old.
By: tecolote32. on 23 Oct 08, 23:08:08
anyone know how much George weighed for this fight?

Look at all the blood at 3:45...Foreman had the greatest punching power of all time (Ali was a much better overall boxer)

To tell the truth, Jonas Cepulis is not russian! He was just at the Soviet Union's team but he is LITHUANIAN, because Lithuania was ocupated by evil Russia then. And what is the most funny here in this story that Cepulis wasn't a professional boxer. He was just an ordinary worker at one of Lithuanian factories when russian coach invited him to be soviet boxers trainings' partner. Cepulis did there a great job and knocked out one of russian boxers before olimpics and just then he got there ;))

Olympic boxing today is a joke and a bore. It was exciting in 1968.
By: angelapeanut. on 17 Aug 08, 11:29:08
this was when olympic boxing was still what boxing should be.Boxing in the olympics now with the headgear and the silly way that its scored has become a farce thats more about munipulating the scoring system to get phoney points than it is about real boxing

he was a f'in killer big george was!
By: aappty. on 12 Aug 08, 19:35:56
upon reflection, chepulis really did show tremendous heart, he stuck to the game plan and didn't fall apart like many would, but foreman was just too strong, willful and dominant for the russian.
By: aappty. on 12 Aug 08, 19:26:36
true. that poor russian would have been boxing (and nothing but boxing - communism = pro) from the time he was very young, but foreman, as far as a super-heavyweight fighters are concerned, was the born the perfect specimen (not discluding or underestimating the fact that he was forced to fight for everything he had from the time he was born).
By: aappty. on 12 Aug 08, 19:21:09
foreman really was incredibly strong and indestructable in his early days. he got hit plenty in this fight but it didn't deter his focus one bit. excellent footwork, including lateral movement, for such a big man and what a fighter? hitting him must have been like hitting a grizzly bear, it just wasn't going to get you far. ali's rope a dope took the awe out of his menace though, but then, it was ali...

all these russians needed was emanuel stewart to train em.!
By: leia5899. on 09 Aug 08, 03:18:32
I heard that after the fight someone gave Foreman a bouquet of flowers, and he gave them to Chapulis. I guess it was the least he could do.
By: pjgraves1975. on 22 Jul 08, 12:29:40
If I'm not mistaken, Chapulis was unbeaten and was considered a heavy favorite for the '68 gold. Foreman just beat him up. The blood gushing from his busted nose was almost too much.
