can someone explain to me the ending to Donnie Darko...me and my friends thought that all of the towns ppl that hav sinned or dun bad things were sent back in time with thoughts of wat they have done...and since Donnies gf has'ent dun anything wrong there for she has no memorie of wats happened,depicted tword the end of the movie...if i am wrong plz tell me and give me ur theorey...i would love to hear =)

I really don't get what the simpsons have to do with it, i don0t get your point. gabriel said it was a way of writting, like a trik, it is not something o books or storytelling. It is a Filosophical issue, that, as said before, has to do with fatalism, there is a related sentence to those ideas wich is, god, the watchmaker of the world, he could even be the watch(maxina)

I think that garbieltane actually got it more accurate; but what i wan't to know is why the english teacher said it as if it was a good thing; when deus ex machina is normally considered as gabriel said a weak way of explaining something that would otherwise be impossible.

that's a creative interpretation. very very interesting (reminds me of all dogs go to heaven) but it's completely wrong. gabriel had it correct. there was an episode of the simpsons where homer pleads god to stop the apocalypse so he can be with his family. before sending him back to earth god shouts "DEUS EX MACHINA!" another popular example is the wizard of oz. after meeting the wizard, the story has nowhere else to progress, so dorothy wakes up and realizes "it was all just a dream!"

"deux ex machina" actully refers to determinism and mecanicism, meaning that the universe is like a clock; perfectly designed by god, and unstopable, however it was also thought that if we could get to know the engineering of the clock, we would be able to know the future. In my point of view, it wouldn't matter if we could, because since All is already determined, the fact that we can see our future is something which was in "god's plan", so we wouldn't be able to change a thing.

Actually, the teacher is a bit wrong in her translation... Deus Ex Machina" translates closer to "God in the machine". It wasn't something holy or profound... it was a way for a writer to get him/herself out of a jam, plotwise, when they've painted themselves in a corner. Nothing can save the hero's? Ok... here's Zeus to smite all the bad guys and save the day. The implementation of Deus ex Machina was often a jarring interruption of the story and quite transparent.

By my interpretation the third view is "Deux ex Machina" in the view of God in the grand design and how the rabbit is a "messiah" of sorts in the aspect that he foresaw events that were going to happen. In which according to the Bible there have been instances where Jesus foresaw his own death. Thats all I can conclude feel free to comment.
