The cut on embrouhcure hole accounts for the initial and 99 percent of the voicing. Then the weight of that particular metal comes in play as well. So, Yes, metal does affect the sound, but player has the final say on voicing in context with that particular material. The property of metal does make a difference, the heavier the metal the more resistance it would provide. Players then will need to adjust his /her set up on how to approach that particular flute/metal. Any well build silver or gold flute can really help on sound and technique, but the flute itself is not going to make a player's playing all of a suddenly better, if one sounds the same on a gold or platinum flute then why not silver? From the craftsmanship's perspective, it is all about the value of the metal that he/she decide to build the flute out of. But for the player it is based more on preferrence and personal feel of the response from the flute.
