From what i was reading about the making of this film, they tried to get an actor who matched previous castrati paintings - but i think your right, a little to masculine(compared to those paintings too, but you cant exactly make a castrati for a movie lol).

Thank you! I bought this soundtrack on itunes, but it doesn't seem to put in the lovely high notes on some of the songs at the end! Gorgeous though

Ahhh...I'd give everything to hear one sound sung by him for a second.

I dont think its possible to be castrated and lock as manly ass this guy. testoserone is prodused in the testicles and is responsable for the manly features.

ya sabiamos...auntes no se dejaba entar a las mujres "sopranos" a las iglesias por esa rzon se utilizo este tipo de tessitura en homdres osea "el castrati" despues se utilizo el "contratenor" al ver lo que se hacia a los niños.

Depends on the year...the yes or no was decided by Papal decree. Pope Sixtus V banned them before Opera exsisted, but one of the Clements 2-3 Popes later actually did allow it (not in the church) and was a librettist for the Opera. Pope Innocent (X? IX?) was a woman hater and banned women from everything, including singing in private or hearing music. Then again he was involved with the Inquisition so...

Thanks! That makes sense.

Women weren't allowed to be in stages or churches or choirs... female character were performed by castratis... after some years there weren't female characters anymore, but castratis characters instead...

We all know what is missing ;D
By: NoirMusic. on 16 Dec 08, 06:43:16
One listener, hearing Cusanino, another of the great Castrati, said "He, sings well, one has to say: He's lively and expressive, but one feels there is something...missing."
By: NoirMusic. on 16 Dec 08, 06:40:02
Actually they did play women in the beginning it wasn't tell later that they became famous and sought after. There are some great books if you are interested my favorite being The world of the Castrati by Patrick Barbier. It's pretty dense but informative....

By: ViaticumForLenore. on 12 Dec 08, 15:47:43
oh I see.. yes, I knew that women were allowed on stage but I didn't know they weren't allowed in church.
By: palcika1. on 12 Dec 08, 13:01:53
Women weren't allowed to sing in church, so boys, countertenors and castrati sang all the soprano and alto parts in sacred works. But on stage, women were allowed. It was the castrati's now unknown, but then greatly admired voice that made them the stars of those days, not a need to replace women. Very few of baroque opera's heroes are tenors.

Poor Farinelli. He suffered a lot and he was a little boy ;((
By: ViaticumForLenore. on 11 Dec 08, 15:21:20

Quien sea sensible... ¡Qué sienta! Esto es para ti, querida amiga. Que la libertad completa, sea ahora contigo.
