i´m just wondering why he took a different tempo in 2.43? it´s much faster than the regular tempo. There shouldn´t be a tempo change there.I just don´t think it fits in. Apart from that, it´s a splendid performence.

"Effortless, but not without effort"!
By: kimmster94K9. on 19 Nov 08, 05:41:08
well if he had made it any slower it wouldn't be all that great either. he's repeating the previous melody. and yes the character changes obviously because after the beautiful deep section, the music returns to the former melody.

Aquí tenemos al gran Rostropovich aunque él descansa ya en el Más Allá, en la Gloria
By: FoxyBookworm. on 17 Nov 08, 05:08:18
I just got back from a concert where a 14 cellist from Texas performed this piece with every ounce of beauty as Rostropovich. Watch out for Russell Houston in the future.

Wow lots of comments lol u really are a cello nerd =D just kidding -- i myself am a clarinet freak.
By: CelloNerd314. on 12 Oct 08, 00:33:54
Nevermind - I listened to it again with that in mind and maybe I was just knitpicking.
By: CelloNerd314. on 12 Oct 08, 00:32:21
at 3:12 is where I really start to dislike the tempo...it feels as if it's in one, which makes the sense of alertness and precision crumble (in my opinion). It has nothing to do with getting all the notes - Slava could get them at any tempo - but the character of the music changes slightly.

I mean, from the moment you here the call of the oboe, it really puts you in a new world.
By: CelloNerd314. on 12 Oct 08, 00:25:11
I am in awe (again) of Rostropovich. And, also, of the Saint-Saens concerto. Ah, the chords and notes create their own textures and musical significance...for the first time, I get an impression of power as well as beauty.
By: powerthis. on 19 Aug 08, 00:00:34
i just wish that he would slow down the sixteenth note so it is easier to hear all of the notes but otherwise fantastic.
By: glizdusia. on 10 Aug 08, 18:13:25
oh god those eight first notes they are so deep so beautiful they make me feel like to be in another world
By: SquimpyLove. on 31 Jul 08, 05:05:32
Oops! Thanks for the correction. :)
By: munkybrain. on 28 Jul 08, 23:06:09
oh man his artificial harmonics sound so good actually
By: munkybrain. on 28 Jul 08, 23:05:00
i'm not an acousticist and don't trust myself to explain so maybe you should look it up :-)
By: rasputin1357. on 26 Jul 08, 18:30:10
Almost correct. It produces a harmonic 2 octaves above the note, not one.
By: befryxell. on 19 Jul 08, 14:46:59
yeah, i wish they were in the music :D i am working on that piece now and i envy the orchestra for getting to play those ending chords...but now, that would be cheeting off slava :D
By: requiemofgods. on 21 Jun 08, 04:57:10
love it

...and how exactly does that happen?
By: manofthehoff. on 31 May 08, 21:14:49
Thank you to rob333c for posting this! I like how he adds the two chords at the end (those aren't in the music).
By: SquimpyLove. on 31 May 08, 20:38:33
That part is the 'artificial harmonics'... you play a note and a harmonic at the same time on the same string so it resonates at an octave higher than normal... it's pretty cool. :)
By: kpxmofu15. on 14 May 08, 22:47:30
its his really high notes

5:33-5:35? it sounded like a bird chirping
By: mimib1230. on 17 Apr 08, 00:58:30
I could listen to this over and over. It is so passionate and inspirational, just from listening to it a few times my Saint Saens has improved so much. Rest in peace, Slava.
