I prefer Coal Chamber's remake with Ozzy Osbourne. Sounds more full than Gabriel's synth-pop version.

Actually, in a 1982 interview, Peter said that this song was about seeing his ex girlfriend with another man while he was high on cocaine. He was talking about drugs being a monkey on his back.

sorry to disagree, I cut Peter's hair and the real deal about shock the monkey is this: this song is about sending the first monkey into space and having to deal with the psychological turmoil of seeing the monkeys expressions as it was fatally tested for a reaction to that dry pressure vaccuum that is space.

@18sydney the monkey is a metaphor, he is not explicitly singing about shocking monkeys although the video makes it as he is. Here is something I found on it. Gabriel himself has described "Shock the Monkey" as "a love song" that examines how jealousy can release one's baser instincts; the monkey is not a literal monkey, but a metaphor for one's feelings of jealousy
