The greatest understanding of our own culture and other cultures. The best sense of humour. The greatest writers and poets the world has ever known. The greatest command of language, our own and "theirs". The toughest yet most compassionate people in the world. The most generous. Out of extreme oppression we made prosperity. Common sense is in our DNA. The greatest work ethic on the face of the planet. Proud to be Irish is not a slogan. It's an unshakable knowing of who we are.

Ireland is the centre of the universe. Dont you people know anything?

There's little good that can be said of English meddling in Ireland. But there is an English perspective: 1. Pope Adrian IV gave Ireland to the English King Henry II in 1155. (Oof. A bit rash. But he knows best. He's infallible.) 2. When Henry VIII showed the red card to Catholicism in order to get his leg over with Anne Boleyn, Ireland remained stoutly catholic and a conduit for popish plots/invasion. 3. The Irish sent over Val Doonican to the detriment of 70s Saturday night TV in England.

Cromwell is still a figure of hatred in Ireland, his name being associated with massacre, religious persecution, and mass dispossession of the Catholic community there. A traditional Irish curse was malacht Cromail ort or "the curse of Cromwell upon you".
By: revengeofcleveland. on 01 Dec 08, 11:08:44
Winston Churchill described the impact of Cromwell on Anglo-Irish relations: "upon all of these Cromwell's record was a lasting bane. By an uncompleted process of terror, by an iniquitous land settlement, by the virtual proscription of the Catholic religion, by the bloody deeds already described, he cut new gulfs between the nations and the creeds. 'Hell or Connaught' were the terms he thrust upon the native inhabitants, and they for their part, across three hundred years,

A former M15 agent has said that former Beatle John Lennon helped fund the IRA in the early 1970s. David Shayler told The Observer that he read the allegation in an M15 file. He also told the paper that an MI5 source within the Workers' Revolutionary Party (WRP) - whose most famous member was actress Vanessa Redgrave - claimed Lennon donated tens of thousands of pounds to their cause too.

ManifestlyE, Ok, I've seen this (mostly) in London and the NI part of Ulster. During international soccer matches, it's common that some ppl in Ireland don't want to see England win, but English people generally support Ireland. However, I've seen similar in Wales, and I've witnessed farworse in Scotland, in a unionist region. Embarrasing. In ROI they quit talking about England 10 years ago (since labour got in) English ppl are everywhere now, and there's a strong respect and friendship.

The Irish have every reason to be proud of their country. But there's still a tendency for the Irish (Scots and the Welsh), to express their sense of nationhood in terms of their hatred of the English! Which is selling their national identity too cheaply, in my opinion. Funny thing - I was in a bar on St Patricks Day eve this year. Full of Irish (as London is)who started the usual anti-English banter. And then toasted St Patrick. "Oh, you do like englishmen, then?" I said. They went: "What?"
By: manifestlyenglish. on 26 Nov 08, 09:38:29
freedomssons...the Beatles are of very distant Irish ancestry. I have more recent Irish ancestry than they do (both grandparents from Ulster), but I'm still English, and so were the Beatles. John Lennon had a good heart and supported a lot of causes. His basic humanity would prevent him from sending money to the IRA: he was always pro-peace. And to fund an organisation involved in violence, whatever the provocation or the justness of the cause, would be anathema to him.

ManifstlyEnglsh, the Irish and English have a different perspective on their sense of place and people. We understand your perspctive more, simply because you outnumber us 12 to 1. Hatred of the English? NO!! This is pride in yourself. I love ALL cultures, and peoples, including my own. Our nation is scattered into a global diaspora. We celebrate and claim those who make it big. We are just a small nation with a big heart. Jamaicans do the exact same, but aren't accused of hatred!

Morrissey, Noel Gallagher, Paul McCartney, John Lennon(who incidentally funded the Irish Republican Army for many years), George Harrison, Elvis Costello- now he's the best??!# ALL FECKING IRISH!
By: rory198. on 25 Nov 08, 11:58:25
unless you live here or were born here, i'm sorry but you're not irish.even the polish guys who just immigrated here are more irish than the beatles.
By: manifestlyenglish. on 25 Nov 08, 10:39:03
Yep. The Beatles took American music, Irish ancestry, English folk music, Scottish balladeering, Indian mysticism, and melded it all together into the greatest catalogue of songs in the history of the planet. But their biggest influence was being born in, and being brought up in, England. An advantage also enjoyed by the Rolling Stones, the Who, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen, Eric Clapton, Deep Purple, The Clash, Sex Pistols, Def Leppard, David Bowie, the Kinks etc Ireland has produced U2.
By: manifestlyenglish. on 25 Nov 08, 10:18:11
England is a melting pot of races and Irish genes are an important part of the creativity of many famous english-born people. There is a tendency for the Irish to try and claim all the credit for famous English-born artists or musicians with Irish ancestry - without giving credit to the impact of their english heritage and english upbringing. It is taking a visceral hatred of the english i.e nothing good could ever come out of England - to an extreme degree.

By: emmetor. on 24 Nov 08, 21:41:49
All the Beatles came from Irish families in Liverpool, and all have Irish names. 80% of people from Liverpool either have Irish family members. In fact, there's a disproportionately huge amount of famous British musicians who are Irish, from Johnny Rotten, to Boy George, Elvis Costello to ... God.. so many. These are 'invisible' Irish.

Paul McCartney's mother, Mary was Irish.
By: hula89. on 19 Nov 08, 21:11:30
If the majority of a person's family is from Ireland then they are going to technically be Irish like Gabriel Agbonlahor plays for England even though he is half nigerian and half scottish simply because he was born n raised in England.
By: dardobartoli. on 19 Nov 08, 20:59:43
No technically they were English ....
