look, I completely agree with your opinion. I mention the Otake-ha only to differentiate it from other -ha's, but I am perfectly aware, as one of the practisers who made keppan, that this is the only branch allowed by the soke. And I would not post anything as it is not allowed by the shimbu dojo.

Otake-ha. Otake sensei's dojo is not a branch. C'mon! Also. I doubt these guys have any ties to a real shihan since Otake-sensei is 'the' shihan of Katori shinto ryu. (if you don't trust me check with the nihon budokan office9 This is a School-copy from a book or a video. If they were with Otake sensei they would not be aloud to post videos etc.

Other thing: Hokachi-Dachi. Your Ukedachi Hokachi-Dachi is deeply uncorrect. I know it's so difficult as technique to do it in a speedy way to play,but is not so "shouldering" the force that take the sword from under and make it act a turn is more on: hips low,that comes up and turn tight on themselves... and the sword remain in the same position all the time, that is moving are only an up-down tight turnament on body axis of hips. Hands keep the sword still but soft,without an effort.

An another important thing: The Kamae(Guard): You keep the kamae almost ever pointing the bokken tip to high part of head of your partner....in the start even you point it OVER the line of the head...and this is not correct. Your point of the bokken might ever being pointed to chudan -sunny plexus- or(as I prefer :-D hehehehehe!!!)to the throat of the partner....precisely to the point of junction of the neck's throat and the collarbones Is there where you might point your guard(kamae)

Hummm...Too much near each other as ma-ai in some steps,please notice the distances of the swords... And in doing kesa-giri(trasversal cutting)in the end of kata,usually you might do a jump, and this for give strenght and a final kime(stillness decision)imprint to the shot,and for narrowing the distance,more speedly. ....Otherwise the kata could continue!!! :-P He-he!!

Personally I don't think this is Sugawara-ha. Sugawara was taught under Yoshio Sugino, correct? I study under the Sugino-ha, and this video bears more resemblance to either Otake's school or copied off the videos he has performed in (which is more likely, after watching all Jinmukai videos).

do you train katori shinto ryu?im a member of the sugawara ha tsksr myself and have studied the art under the guidance of sugawara sensei. take a look at his history in traditional japanese budo and you`ll find out wether his proper teacher or not.he`s shihan in aikido and has a kyoshi lisence in katori shinto ryu witch he receaved from Otake risuke sensei.he studied aikido under morihei ueshiba sensei for years.the style of his tsksr is considered to be the same as otakes senseis.

I agree with kaifinn. I will refrain from any technical critique, but in general, everything seems to be a bit too belabored, and not very direct. I am not sure if this is one of Sugawara sensei's groups or not, but I would definitely say that they are not indicitive of the overall quality of his students.

His signature is the one based on the religion such as Shugendo that the ninja etc. also were using. It is likely not to believe easily in the Christian. However, the Japanese is believing in various religions at the same time as one thing. The dragon is the animal especially assumed to be god's messenger. The signature is not the one that he made arbitrarily, but it is used in Japan and China from an old age.

And how do you define "practiced as a sport"? The competition side of kendo isn't the only side to it. Sports usually are defined to be the activities of competitive nature. Whilst kendo may be competitive, it has a deeper side to it. And define one olympic activity that isn't a sport.

Kendo is NOT a sport.. If yo uthink of it as a sport, then you're doing it for the wrong reasons. Kendo is based on the fundamentals of Budo. The spirit of the warrior. If it was olympicalized (like Judo) then it would become a sport. But I would rather die than see that happen. It depends on what you do kendo for, Kendo is the contiunal improvement of oneself through their experiences. The meaning of kendo will differ from person to person. But to me, it should not be viewd as a sport

"Cries of anguish" is the opposite of correct! Kiai is a release of spiritual energy not from the throat but more the diaphragm. Kiai can actually help in very immediate ways if done with heart and not "limply" uttered. Last night during keiko I felt weak , dizzy and was coughing a lot. I put all of that out of my head and focused my kiai on my opponent . It was a very good practice. If you honestly feel that you are giving 110% you can't be beaten spiritually .

In modern shiai (match) rules if you drop your shinai ( bamboo sword) you will receive hansoku (penalty). It is the offenders responsibility to pick up their own shinai. I think that the circumstances of the show were unusual . There were many irregularities with the presentation of kendo in this example. Even today, presentations of kendo by non-kendo educated TV or film companies are rarely completely accurate.I'm not sure that he was being disrespectful just helpful.

In life or death combat no, but because of the scoring locations and the rules for making a strike actually count (must be a very clean strike), when they get in close after a strike the sweep puts them at a great disadvantage if they lose their footing, for taking strike from the opponent still standing.

not even close to true. if you dissarm in kendo you have to hit quik before they stop the match, you only get one hit and a split second to land it. and more importantly there are many ways to dissarm an apponent wther they like it or not lol. i train 3 times a week with a sensei that is rather famouse for his disarm techniques and believe me he dont need your cooperation to do it lol

in real combat disarm your oponent is allowed and there are several ways to acomplish that most of them require the cooperation from the one that gets disarmed (lol)

Seriously, a couple of those things are real! My husband soaks soy sauce into his rice until the thing is "noticeably heavier"! I just laugh and let him do it. He's a salt fiend. I just always hope whoever prepared the meal is looking the other way when he does it. On his end, he thinks I'm weird for dipping ginger into the sauce and sprinkling it on my rolls. Ummm... I know this is "spoofy," but how accurate is this video? Some of the things it said seemed very unlikely, like wearing the geta home. Is there really a dish of salt outside sushi-ya? Also, it seems more likely that contemporary sushi-ya would just give you a receipt, instead of you having to ask for a "ryoshusho."

Oh, yes and before i forget, Jinmukan takes part in an annual Event in Kansas City with the Ryobu-Kai as well as the TSKSR, who sends representatives to do demonstrations and make sure the school is being properly taught. If you're in the area you should check it out- it's always interesting to see. It's coming up soon i think.

This is Sensei High, who in his capacity as Intn'l Director for Japan Karate-Do Ryobu-Kai was taught by Nagase Sensei while he was the Japanese Consulate-who was permitted by TSKS-R in a limited way- so as to "foster interest and learning of the Japanese culture, philosophy, and martial arts."though allowed to teach it, you are quite right Daikeli, Jinmukan is not part of the TSKSR nor allowed to change the kata in any way.Their affiliation remains informal but amiable.

Yup! Daikeli is 100% correct. Not approved by Otake & Soke of TSKSR you are not in the ryu. But just as an addition: There are people who started out in Sugino-ha but later left the organisation and got permission to enter the main tradition under Otake Ritsuke. These people had to leave behind their Sugino-ha ranking/licenses and start anew. I believe that one of the official TSKSR guys in Holland started out as Sugino-ha.

basically, this man nor any of his students including vysokij are permitted, licennsed, or authorized in anyway to demo Katori Shinto ryu, nor practice, nor teach. And it is unlikely Otake Sensei is a friend of vysokij's sensei. There is only one authorized shidosha or teacher by Otake Sensei in the US and he is in Washington state. If you are not part of Otake's group you are not a legitimate practitioner

That is what I was told when the kata at 6.45 was demonstrated to me a few years ago, that it was arrow avoidance. As for the spin at 3.47, I was told it is simply to give yourself some distance after that diagonal cut following the tsuki, so it will be easier to execute the kirioroshi (as we in MJER call it). The cut extends all the way back so the body spin puts you in position for the final blow.

I believe that Otake sensei said that the reason behind the jumping and kiai in their katas was due to the fact that this IAI is done againts armour wearing attackers and therefore the need for extra power and intention.Its any body teaching TSKSR in the Miami area?

Notice how everytime the sword wielder moves in the bo wielder moves out. This is practice to keep his distance from the sword. The bo has longer range therefore the bo wielder has no need to put himself in as close as the sword. If this was a demo/practice of sword techniques, you might notice something like the sword wielder moving in as the bo moves in. The truth is, the sword is a weak weapon, and getting in close for an attack is hard against a longer weapon.

actually i just found that out. i was under the impression that they were. but i have a friend from the sugawara-ha in korea and trains under sugawara sensei from time to time. since learning that i am guessing that they are their own independant group.

Sorry Scott, I don't find myself needing to correct you often, but Jinmukan is not one of Sugawara Tetsutaka Sensei's groups. Kaifinn is of course correct in that it is not one of Otake Sensei's groups.

It is TSKSR. I'm not sure which group they belong to. It doesn't look like a Sugino group.. From the fluid flowing motions I'd say they are Sugawara but I'm not sure. The speed and flowing motions is a good indication of it.
