Well, when I personally heard Olga Kern play Rach3 in April 2007 with our NMSO, I just had GOOSEBUMPS all throughout her performance...I was totally impressed by her virtuosity and amazing accuracy!! I would have to hear Martha Argerich personally to experience her "natural unstoppable expression" firsthand. Otherwise, I don't have any opinions about Argerich.

Fact: Martha went into competitions for a larf, never expecting to get beyond first round,having to urgently practits her Noises at last minute before winning. Olga certainly plays well for this rach3, but is very unconvincing in anythg else. Martha has a natural unstoppable expresssion carrying her far beyond confines of mere competitions which in any case since 1970's are largely politically pre-arranged and a major cause of audience defecation.

Well, when I say, "Don´t imagine anything," I really mean "It is better to stay within the confines of the composer´s intentions." I mean, you listen to Shostakovich´s stuff, and you know what´s he´s aiming for the turbulant time period of the Soviet Union, etc. But to say this piece is about butterflies and dark staircases... well, it´s a nice image, but not quite what Gershwin had in mind. Not a bad thing, but I find it takes away from the actual piece.

I don't think imagining NOTHING is a good idea either, it's opinion on what a person sees in the music. Personally throughout the whole song I see the stereotypical American lives processing, and when the piece hits its loudest, most concrete points I think of the wonders of industrialization, and the softest parts remind me of the calmer bits of American life.

Only people who know nothing about music and music theory imagine dark staircases and butterflies. So, Music 101: just listen to the notes relative to each other within the piece. Don´t imagine anything. It actually TAKES AWAY from the music, you know. And I´m quite hesitant to say this, but I guess if it´s the only way you can listen to it... be my guest...?

creo q he escuchado mejor interpretaciòn al piano del concierto, sin embargo karajan hace que la orquesta sea tan brillante, majestuosa e imponente que el piano se torna como un bebe llorando en medio de una guerra. aquì me parece màs concierto para orquesta com acompañamiento de piano.

Wow, some of us seem to feel quite personally about Stravinsky, hmmm... Just so you don't think I'm an "idot", might I first say that I have been honored to see this piece performed live by Miles Graber and Colette Valentine. As interesting an experiment it is to "play with yourself" (just think of Marsallas and the Vivaldi concerto for two trumpets), nothing can replace the tension and palpable excitement of watching two perform this. Also, sorry, but I still find player pianos amusing...
