Great statement about the crew. Outstanding that people still remember the crew.

We know it was carrying a large load of taconite. If she sat too low in the water, she would be more suceptible to flooding- especially if her cargo holds were not properly sealed. The weight of her load and flooding were probably contributing factors to the FITZ'z sinking.
By: diddy774. on 26 Nov 08, 05:49:38
I agree with most of your hypothesis. The FITZ was a mighty ship, and I believe it took a combination of factors to sink such a colossus. I think during the storm they may have unknowingly ran aground. This coupled with the fact they were being battered by an intense storm may have led to the FITZ's demise. They simply may have "sagged" too much. Sagging is a term used to describe when too much weight is placed in the center of the ship and can no longer structurally support the weight.
By: BloodyEmoTear. on 25 Nov 08, 21:23:30
One idea was that the ship hit bottom and got a hole, Another is that it got cought between 2 waves and cracked under pressure, one of the easiest to explain and the most sencefull is that The hatches wernt properly closed and water enterd the loads. These are some of the reasons why she sunk. But their are many more. If you have any questions message me, i've spent hours on end reaserching this tragic wreak and i know alot about it!

Well, No onw knows exactially why "Old Fitz" or The Edmund Fitzgerald went down. Their was some plausable ideas though.

I just finished a report on the SS Edmund Fitzgerald... I just moved to Mn and had to do a Minnesota history report... this was on the list and I thought it was interesting. Boy I learned alot, I'm emotionally attatched to this story and ship now. My dad is a sailor (USN 22+ years) and I remember telling me about this when I was a kid, but of course as a child you never take anything to heart. I do now. RIP All 29 sailors who died on that ship.

Hats off to the men and women that have met their fates in the cold of the "Ice water Mansion" Most of us sitting at our computers could not even imagine a life lived, let alone lost, at sea.

Oh Wow, I'm so glad to find this song. Great video, too! I never saw that news clip! All my life I've lived along the Lakes. and am deeply attached to my local Erie. I've heard that many if not most of the shipwrecks around here are dissapeared. I swear I was connected to sailing in a past life. A woman Pirate? Who knows. But I feel a force so powerful coming from the open water.

Went up to whitefish point a few months ago ...I was in awe!! I actually had goosebumps. When I stepped on the beach and walked to lake Superior, I felt an instant attraction. I can't explain it, but ever since then, she has been calling me back. This song has been literally stuck in my head for 3 months, everyday! We live in lower MI. and are now looking to move closer to the U.P just so we can go more often. I wish I were walking that cold beautiful beach right now.

Crazy enough? Heck those were just little laps ;) I know the lakes can get pretty rough. Reguardless of the time of year, a squall is nasty on them. Dad and I got caught about 5 miles out on Huron when a waterspout hit. We were heading for the St. Claire River as the weather was deteriorating quick. I just remember waves coming over the bow of his 30ft cruiser, and the spray shooting up 10 to 20 in the air, and that was a little squall in July.

Wow, that's all I can say is WOW! This is the best tribute to the Fitz and her crew that I have ever seen and I've seen many. I remember the wreck day well even though I was just 10 at the time. What a sad day...it's a horrific memory for me and this gold song by Gordon will insure that people never forget. I would love to know how the family of the crew are doing now. Hugs to them...we will never forget. Melissa

I live in duluth, and I've only seen a small portion of what Lake Superior can do. I've seen a few sailboats get tossed around, and I have seen big waves (one time, we were crazy enough to go swimming in 10 foot waves.)

The mystery is not that they couldn't find the Edmund Fitzgerald after it sank since it was quickly located the very next year. The mystery is why it sank and that debate doesn't appear it will ever end. And 729 feet long ship is not a "canoe." At the time it was built, the Fitzgerald was the largest freighter on the Great Lakes. By the time it sank, much bigger ships had appeared on the lakes, but the Fitzgerald was still considered a very large ship.
