Of course not, according to Wikipedia, the original Clara was Abbie Mitchell. Renee Fleming delivered an excellent rendition of this aria nonetheless. (The legato, crescendo and diminuendo towards the end are perfect)

She is not singing it as the lullaby that is is, she is accenting it with a blues idiom, dramatic license for effect, not sung as an aria in the true sense of Gershwin's score. She also slows it down tremendously. Nice job.

I'm not offended at all. Otherwise I wouln't have simply asked you what you meant. I probably would have added something lol. I know that Summertime is from Porgy and Bess but I hate it when sung with an "operatic" voice. It might fit the composer's idea but I find that it REALLY doesn't fit the song. It's just a matter of taste.

What I meant was you would protest the idea of someone praising Luciano Pavarotti for singing Baby Got Back. This aria is from the OPERA Porgy and Bess; this is how the composer intended the performance to be. I'm not sure how the jazz version came about and I'm utmost unsure how the baby will sleep either with that jazz approach. Not trying to dispute your comment, just wanna to make sure you are aware of what you're talking about; please don't be offended. Cheers !

Muy buena voz para cantar Aida, lucia di lammermour, etc... pero esto es un espiritual negro y encima canción de cuna... el estilo es un desastre, los gorgoritos para los clásicos, sólo las mujeres de color tienen voz para cantar esta partitura, cantara muy bien esta mujer, pero este estilo se le queda enormemente grande.

In response to the comment about the sliding, one must remember that this song is being sung by a young lady in a very emotional state, I don't think that surgical notes quite cut it. For me Renee has really cracked the spirit of the song as the composer intended. Bravo Renee!

I sometimes forget how ahead of the curve Mozart was. On the one hand, this aria does the traditional Baroque A-B-A form. On the other, it precedes the bel canto era by the way we establish the emotion in a slow section, and contrast it in a faster section. Genius!

renee sang in mf, Dame Kiri is singing in p. That explains the pitching. I feel that Renee tends to sing in a dark color most of the time. For this aria, the voice must always shine What is so difficult about this aria is that you have to sing with 'true piano' for 2-3 minutes and then you have to reach the upper register continuously, higher and higher till the end of the aria in f.

I don't know much about music/singing, but I watched renee fleming's performance then this one. And I prefer Kiri. Renee has a beautiful voice, just gorgeous but there is nothing interesting about it. Kiri grabs my attention and the sound of her voice is so different and powerful, and beautiful I loved it. She sounds like she really feels it, and Renee sounds like she is trying to make it sound pretty. Plus Kiri is hot.

I've listened closely several times, and have a problem discerning anything that isn't simply part of the expression I have grown to know and lvoe from Ms. Fleming. But I am getting older . . . perhaps the road trip got to her a little, but this is one of the more difficult vocals for a soprano. And that incredible high! What a voice! Best, Chuck

I adore her artistry but such glotal sounds were heard in this clip.. I wonder if she was having some vocal problems that night! I think even as a professional singer its important for me not to be so judgemental on my peers and idols simply because we are not machines.. its not going to be perfect EVERYTIME!! And being on the road and having to be the best I totally understand what can happen to the voice!!

She's got a fine voice. I completely resent her fame because as you tour YOUTUBE, you'll fine literally dozens of singers of equal artistry. Many with no name. I think listeners are responding to her fame.Just listen to Blythe, Hunt-Lieberson, Berganza, Schwarzkopf, Tebaldi, Callas to name a few.

She sounds old and not exquisit (legatoline and breathing are a horror) enough for that aria! She lost her qualitys because she is singing to much the heavy stuff - and her voice is not uge enough for that- only to darken the voice is not good and never enough! RENE FLEMING is a killer of her voice! Excuse I am not praud about... to say this... Normally I love her Mozart and Händel......

Also, wenn das von Süssmayr ist, ist die Missa solemnis von Franz Ries. So muß es sich abgespielt haben: Süssmayr schrieb vom Originalmanuskript ab, schmiß es hinterher in den Ofen und behauptete frech, die Musik sei von ihm, und sogar "Fachleute" fallen darauf herein.

I totally disagree with you...Pape sings very good (especially in the tuba mirum - sadly unavailable at youtube). The one that does a weak performance is Bartoli especially when she is paired up with Augér...compare her singing with Sara Mingardo's and you will hear!

The bass is Rene Pape. His singing in the Benedictus is sublime as are the other beautifully blended voices - he's German-trained and sings regularly at the Met - incidentally George Solti is conducting.

My God, I'm sure Mozart hired Arleen Auger in heaven to have her sing all of his music. She really understood what Mozart is about. She even has la Bartoli sings decently, which is an event!

Ohhh my god... you know you don't have to make yourself sound like a potatoe is stuck in your throat to be a good bass - Personally, I think he sounds terrible... maybe he's doing a good job at the style, but I really, really despise it... Anywho, long live Cecilia!
