I heard he plucked out his feathers when Dr. Pepperberg left him to go on a long trip and he was stressed because she was gone. That makes sense because parrots become very bonded to one person.

obviously stressed,parrots live a lot longer in the wild and he had been plucking his feathers poor thing, animal exploitation, hideous, on par with a chimp wearing clothes. i watch wildlife documentaries and see film of these birds in the wild flying in flocks over the amazon rain forest then to see this shocking.

ahh such a shame, what a cute parrot. both my mum and my sister have african greys, i can see how easily you can get attached to them they are so very clever and smart.

look at the down sticking up, thats moulting friend. He looks pretty happy when hes eating the corn ...and any creature that has to satop and think STOPS AND THINKS...pause-answer...not freeze, you are seeing things. and if it was plucking-smart creatures tend to be neurotic/compulsive habits.dogs do this too. they chew themselves or have seperation anxiety. some birds pluck from habit and only an elizabethan collar helps...

hi! I've raised greys for 3 years in a pet center. You're right: birds like structure but can you explain to me why he was plucking himself? A relaxed african grey doesn't freeze all the time like ALex did when asked to speak.

probably genetic.CAGs dont live long in the wild (40yrs-ish),longer in captivity but its not written in stone they WILL live to be 70yrs.He had an interesting,stimulating life. Birds r like kids-u dont spoil ur kids, you dont spoil ur pets.I had a grey.Alex was a lucky bird who did alot in 31yrs.they NEED interction or they will feather-pluck.he had great feathering(except moulting)so u cant say he was stressed-he never showed signs of stress-birds dont hide stress as well as they hide sickness

uhhh highly doubtful since he was given the world in that place-and boohoo he had to play games and do iteresting stuff and he was introduced to all sorts of materials, colours,textures-this is CAG PARADISE!I envy his life for MY bird's sake-they would be blessedly lucky to get that much attention and interation daily!my IRN would die of HAPPINESS not Stress LOL butsome people have to work during the day LOL! He lived a good life, u cant force birds 2 do anything they dont want anyways!!

force? he spoke on his own...what FORCE-is she a Jedi? CAG's LOVVVVE to be spoken to, to speak, to play,to do triks...they are one of the most interactive birds around. I had a CAG for 14 years...Alex was in Congo African Grey Paradise (for a captive bred) and making him finish one chore more will not kill him!! geeze ppl, have u ever owned animals? do u not know their psychology?they like structure, birds especially. So he 'worked' for his toys,food & playroom-He had it good & loved them back

She spent 31 yrs with that bird, i highly doubt she wanted to hurt him and she had a job to do...are you going to say a see-and-eye dog is abused because they are trained to do things?no!police dogs? ..what makes him so different? Just like a human child they need stimulation, activity, training ans attention...Alex got TONS of that AND MORE! That parrot led the best captive life of any bird u dont know African Greys if you say he didnt like it-u dontspoil a kid, u dont spoil your pets.simple
