I know, and the other thing is that she had such a horrific death. The thing she was the most passionate about (her cello) was slowly taken away from her because she could no longer move. From what I gather, she died slowly and painfully (both emotionally and physically). Very sad story. Long live Jackie's music.

I'm kind of tired of seeing comments like this. Powerful doesn't necessary mean fast. In fact, the most powerful repertoires are often the slowest. It holds true for this concerto as well. Imagine it played fast - could it hold more elegance and anticipation if it were faster?

Good for you, liz22463. Keep trying, because it's a talent that builds on itself. If you learn 1 concert piece this year, you can learn 2 next year, and so on. Combined with the creativity of the composer, this is one of the highest demonstrations of the capabilities of the human mind, and YOU can be part of it. Keep it up!

Notice there's no sheet music. A piece like this has a quarter-million notes. Not just the notes, but the exact timing and inflection of each note. Not bad for 88 years old! He started going blind the next year, so committed the Iliad and the Odyssey to his photographic memory, to read when blind!

I wonder how long it would take me to learn this piece. I remember playing a dumbed-down piano solo piece simply called "norwegian concerto," which contained some elements of this piece, but it would be brilliant being able to play the real thing. I haven't played piano much in the last couple of years though...

Stupendous permance by the legendary maestro himself. Besides his extraordiny talents..., the one thing he does that impresses me the most is that he played the entire piece by rote.A very complex/daunting piano piece composed by one of the great talents of his time. Any number of other pianists had may have had greater technical facility than Horowitz (if you listen to his unedited live performances taped from the audience, as opposed to the 'live' recordings issued by CBS, you'll hear tons of wrong notes and flubbed passages), including Rachmaninov, Moiseiwitsch, Friedman and younger pianists such as Pollini, Michelangeli, etc. I don't dislike Horowitz, but you're citing Schonburg's OPINION: "So and so is the greatest technician of his time" isn't a fact.

"Technician" is a fine way to describe Horowitz. Technique with hardly any feeling. Put side-by-side with Artur, he becomes a mechanical clod. I argue Horowitz is NOT the best ever for those who prefer feeling their music.

brianCIM-I fully agree. This version was the first one that I ever owned on an L.P.,with Schumann on the flip side. It was also and still remains the best. Cortot along with Jorge Bolet-do the best Liszt sonata in B.If you haven't heard these-do so. Aside from these Martha Argerich is as good a third choice as there is,along with Richter.Cheers.

I am currently working on this song for tenor saxophone and my teacher suggested I watch this video. It is certainly amazing. I only have 2 comments: 1. The title of the piece is "Allegro Appassionata" not "Allegro Appassionato". 2. It seems to me that the tempo is above 112 bpm, the tempo that the chart states. That being said, it is still miraculous.

It honestly does not matter how old you are when you learn a piece like this, the difficulty raises with age, because more is expected of a more experienced player. I am a junior still using this piece for auditions, and I can assure you that it is 1000x better than the 4th graders commenting here, but that is because I have put all of my past knowledge, technique and style into it, where a fourth grader can barely stumble to get in the general vacinity of notes at eighth=60bpm.

The best short introduction to Jacqueline du Pre is the biography in the musicianguide website (just Google "musicianguide Jacqueline du Pre"). There is also an excellent entry for her in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and the H.W. Wilson Current Biography Yearbook (1970 Edition). Next would be William Wordsworth, "Jacqueline du Pre: Impressions". There is an excellent section in "Brief Lives" by Colin Matthew, including recollections of Jacqueline du Pre by Yehudi Menuhin.

What was special about Jacqueline du Pre's playing? Her tone was not quite as distinctive as Rostropovich's... yet her phrasing was effortlessly expressive and idiomatic, and extremely imaginative. Essentially it is unique in the way in which it builds energy and emotional depth - it is "dynamic" rather than "static". It is emotional without being emotionalizing. And it only works for certain styles and not others (how else can you explain why she refused to play modern works?).

Excuse me...? You would like to see this performed by a "real talented cellist"? This is Jacqueline du Pre one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century! To critique her intonation is remarkable! How can you?! The point is not that her intonation is iffy (if you can even say that...I blame it one the dodgy recording) but the fact that music is impassioned. Please try not to critique unless in a scholarly manner, otherwise one comes off a anything but scholarly. Brilliant recording!

Intonation is not quite good, but please keep in mind that his recording was done long before computer-like intonation was the most important criterion for judging musical events - and this is a unique event. Playing in tune on a piano is easy, folks, so I recommend all piano players to keep quiet. At least until they have taken some violin lessons.

Barenboim y du Pré son como la versión mejorada de Richter y Rostropovich, son la evolución, poseen la técnica aombrosa de estos dos gigantes de la música, pero la ventaja es que Daniel y Jacqueline tenían la pasión y la expresividad de la cual carecían los rusos, aún así, grandes todos ellos, vivan los cuatro pero habría sido interesante oir un conjunto emm no sé, du Pré- Richter o Barenboim- Rostropovich
