Yo-Yo Ma: Elgar Cello Concerto, 1st mvmt Posted by: medpiano
Video duration: 586 seconds Yo-Yo Ma with Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago SO in this performance from 1997. This concerto will forever be associated with Jaqueline duPre, but YYM gives a performance that is beyond breathtaking. It is fitting that Barenboim is the conductor; I'm sure he feels this concerto is still in very good hands. Nessun Dorma (Pavarotti, NY 1980) Posted by: medpiano
Video duration: 180 seconds Luciano Pavarotti singing from a concert in January 1980 with the NY Philharmonic cond. by Zubin Mehta. Compare this performance with other (later) dates; Pavarotti here is clearly still in absolute total command. This was part of the "Live from Lincoln Center" 30th anniversary special. MTT- Tchaikovsky Symphony No.4, 4th mvmt Posted by: medpiano
Video duration: 566 seconds Michael Tilson Thomas conducting the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in a very high-powered 4th movement of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 in F minor. Compare this with Barenboim's version also on my channel, and you'll see two excellent performances, similarly high energy levels, but very different styles of conducting. Berezovsky plays Islamey Posted by: medpiano
Video duration: 454 seconds From a 2005 recital in Mexico City. This exact performance became my new "Islamey" standard. I already had one from Boris on CD; this one surpasses it in both musicality, spontaneity, and brilliance. Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4, 2nd mvmt Posted by: medpiano
Video duration: 540 seconds Barenboim conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in a stellar performance of Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony in F minor for the opening concert of Carnegie Hall's 1997 season. (BTW, sorry for the poor vid quality; it's obvious YT is dialing down the quality on all videos now to (I suppose) save space--this was a crystal-clear original. Video duration: 520 seconds Barenboim conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in a stellar performance of Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony in F minor for the opening concert of Carnegie Hall's 1997 season. Barenboim has full control here, especially at the end, taking the repeated section (7:14) first meno mosso, then stringendo--incredib le!!! (Yes, that is the legendary Bud Herseth marshalling the CSO's incredible brass). Display Video Comments | Hide Video Comments | Add Comment Latest comments made on this video:

Chopin's score is Chopin's interpretation.
By: nyc11104. on 20 Nov 08, 21:48:33
I don't understand all this discussion about "interpretation"... The instructions for the performer are right on the score, in plain black and white, and the phrase structure is clear in Chopin. The pianist's job is to play the piece with clarity and with some sense of nuance and tone color, rather than as a "virtuosic" trainwreck that shows off how fast one can play.

Everyone should interpret Chopin however they like.
By: PeacfulJoh. on 19 Nov 08, 02:26:03
Why in the world is he spasming towards the second-to-last page? This isn't necessary. I don't understand why big pianists just bang these "easy" pieces out when they can be so beautiful. Loud and rhythmic doesn't mean expressive, let's remember that.
By: Malaka57. on 18 Nov 08, 22:46:54
Watts is just "tossing it off" here, that is obvious. I would'nt consider this at the "recording" level. I first heard him doing the Brahms 2nd at Avery Fisher Hall in NYC and spent the next two days in a daze... It was a mega-watt performance.
By: jeremy71991. on 18 Nov 08, 04:01:58
Excuse me sir, very few people have the credentials to criticize Andre Watts. When someone rises to the pinnacle that Watts has achieved, I think they should be able to interpret Chopin however they'd like.

OME WHAT A BEAST. If you guys want some interesting modern compositions, search Cohen's Scherzo 7. It's from the video game Bioshock

No!
By: nyc11104. on 04 Nov 08, 07:46:17
OK - It just seems like the left hand is flying out of control without a clear sense of downbeat, and the timbre is awfully dry in spots without any pedal. (Just my opinion of course)
By: max847. on 01 Nov 08, 05:08:31
Pollini's interpretation is my favorite.
By: BloodyLovin. on 31 Oct 08, 09:01:26
Not really, although I'd say both pieces are 3/5 on the technical difficulty scale.
By: BloodyLovin. on 31 Oct 08, 08:58:37
It seems like the best interpretations of the Romance composers (minus Beethoven - Brendel is the master of him) and even later virtuoso pieces all come from either: 1. Cziffra, 2. Richter, or 3.Hofmann (possibly the greatest since Liszt himself, not enough recordings to determine though). All the other greats lack at least one of the following necessities: speed, power, clarity, emotion, rubato mastery, or relative creativity.

wow that's good lol hehe my crush can play that too =]

lol indeed
By: Leomerya12. on 23 Oct 08, 01:09:32
You know the interesting thing? I looked at this a few years back and thought the same, but now it doesn't look so bad. Chopins op10 no4, now that one is scary, but I suppose in a year, I'll be like "it wasn't so bad". heh...
By: porcospino289. on 19 Oct 08, 15:13:37
Cripes. I just listened to the Sviatoslav Richter rendition of this piece on youtube, and... whoa.... One begins to see why so many regard Richter as the greatest pianist ever.

Amazing!!
By: ploher. on 07 Oct 08, 18:10:46
i'm learning this piece at the moment and it is soo incredible hard. But to play like he does, that's almost impossible. incredible performance, very fast, but he has everything under control. amazing!!
By: caligirl747. on 26 Sep 08, 07:53:16
I have no idea why...but facially, he kind of reminds me of the Liszt virtuoso Cziffra-just a very tanned version. lol
By: LongDriveChamp03. on 21 Sep 08, 22:17:41
It's amazing to see him play this. He's so in control of the keyboard. Astonishing.
